Man dies of cholera in Kapetta

Kalpetta, Friday, June 24, 2011: A 32-year-old man has died of cholera at Kalpetta in Wayanad district on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Kumaran, a resident of Paniya adivasi colony.

This is the first cholera death that has been reported in the past five years in the State.

Cholera in Wayanad

KALPETTA: Three tribesmen of the Kodamerikkunnu Paniya colony at Vellamunda, near Mananthavadi, were admitted to the District Hospital at Mananthavadi with symptoms of cholera on Thursday.

It was confirmed after a medical test at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital that the patients were suffering from cholera, Neetha Vijayan, District Medical Officer, said on Friday.

Two tribesmen of the colony died of the same symptoms at the hospital a few days ago, the DMO said.

Child dies of cholera in Wayanad

Kalpetta, Tuesday, June 28, 2011: A four-year-old child had died of cholera at Kalpetta in Wayanad district on Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Vishnu hailing from Pulpally.

This is the second cholera death that has been reported in the past five years in the State. Kumaran, a resident of Paniya adivasi colony had also died of cholera.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Six people have died of cholera while 56 have been hospitalised with diarrhoea in the tribal hamlets of Kerala's hilly Wayanad district, a legislator said Wednesday.

The issue was raised in the Kerala assembly by A. Pradeep Kumar, a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) legislator.

"The state government and the health department have miserably failed to contain the spread of cholera in the three tribal hamlets in Wayanad. The customary sanitation work that is done ahead of the monsoon season has not been done," said Kumar.

"So far, six people have died and 56 people are admitted in various hospitals," he added.

KALPETTA: With one more death reported on Wednesday night, the cholera toll touched six in the district. The deceased is Vellan, 65, a native of Karimam tribal settlement near Pulppalli, who was referred to the District Hospital, Mananthavadi, from the Community Health Centre (CHC), Pulppalli.The number of deaths at the Karimam tribal settlement at Pulppalli, from where highest number of patients sought medical care due to acute diarrhoea, is two and the total toll from Pulppalli region is three.At the Community Health Centre (CHC), Pulppalli, 14 new patients were admitted with symptoms of cholera on Thursday.In total, 50 persons have been admitted to the CHC so far. Among the patients, only three are from general category while the rest are from tribal communities."So far, 99 cases of diarrhoea have been reported from 10 panchayats in the district," Dr Nitha Vijayan, District Medical Officer, said. Talking to 'Express', she said that the aged person who died at the district hospital, Mananthavadi, on Thursday was discharged from the hospital after treatment for some other illnesses and again came back with diarrhoea. Underlining the cause of the outbreak, she said that 90% of the cholera patients contracted the disease from their kith and kin who returned from farms in Karnataka.

One cholera case reported from Kannur

Kannur, Friday, July 08, 2011: In addition to the recent outbreak of cholera in Wayanad, another person from Kannur was also confirmed with cholera on Friday. The person identified as Mohanan hailing from Tamil Nadu has been admitted to the Pariyaram Medical college hospital.

According to reporters, several persons are under treatment in Wayanad district with symptoms of cholera. The official reports reveal that the patients who have been admitted in the hospital from 13 colonies in the district were suffering from cholera.

The condition of five persons who are under treatment at Kozhikode medical college hospital with symptoms of cholera is reported to be critical. It was confirmed after a medical test at the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital that the patients were suffering from cholera, Neetha Vijayan, District Medical Officer, said.

Around seven persons have succumbed to the disease. Preventive measures, including chlorination of drinking water every three days, had been taken in tribal colonies in the area.

Cholera confirmed in one colony

Kozhikode: An expert team from the Department of Community Medicine and Microbiology of Kozhikode Medical College confirmed that the cause of diarrhoeal deaths at Koduvelikkunnu Tribal Colony in Wayanad was indeed cholera. After a thorough investigation on June 25, the specialists' team identified the pathogen as Vibrio Cholera, El-tor Ogawa.
