ICMR confirms fruit bats as source of Nipah outbreak in Kerala
The outbreak of Nipah virus was first reported in Kampung Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998. There is no vaccine or drug to treat Nipah infection. The primary treatment for human cases is intensive supportive care.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed that fruit bats were the primary source of the Nipah outbreak in Kerala?s Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, where 17 people died due to the virus earlier this year.

Initially, a central medical team had ruled out bats as the primary source of the infection after the samples collected from bats in two Kerala districts tested negative.

Later, another medical team in its report to the Union health ministry said bats cannot be ruled out as the samples were collected from insectivorous bats, which are not known to be Nipah carriers.

In the second round, samples from 55 fruit bats were collected and sent to National Institute of Virology in Pune. An ICMR official said the samples from fruit bats tested positive for the virus, confirming that they were the source of Nipah infection in Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

An exhaustive study by the Kerala Health Department tracing the ?contact history? of patients affected by the recent Nipah outbreak in the state has found that 17 of the 19 infected persons got the virus directly from Patient No. 1, Muhammed Sabith.

They included three in his own family; four at a hospital in Perambra, Kozhikode, including a patient (Ismail) and a staff nurse (Lini Puthussery) who were with Sabith on the night of May 4; and 10 at the Kozhikode Government Medical College, where he died.

Counting Sabith, that leaves out only one. This sole patient is believed to have caught the infection from Ismail. Of the 19 infected, 16 died, excluding Sabith, 22. His death is not officially recognised as Nipah-linked as his samples were never tested and he was buried before the infection was diagnosed as Nipah. ?But it has been epidemiologically proven that he was also a Nipah victim,? says Dr T Jayakrishnan, a senior professor of community medicine who was part of the Nipah cell set up by Kerala to fight the infection and played a key role in preparing protocols for the same.

The death of a toddler from shigella infection in Kerala?s Kozhikode Medical College and Hospital is bringing the state under a blanket of panic, yet again.

Earlier, officials had issued a warning about shigella after three people died in the state due to suspected shigella infection.

The 2-year-old boy, Ziyan, was undergoing treatment at the hospital in Kozhikode for the infection.

The cause of the death of a two-year-old at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, on Monday was not shigella bacteria infection, the Health Department has said.

The District Medical Office issued a clarification later in the day, though earlier reports had said that Siyan, son of Harshad of Puthuppady, was the third victim of shigella infection in the State. Quoting lab reports of Siyan?s body fluid samples, the authorities said he had died due to acute encephalitis syndrome.
