KOCHI: At a time when the nation is fighting with its might and main to contain H1N1 influenza A virus ( Swine Flu), Kerala has once again proved its mettle in the health care by successfully curbing H1N1. Nationwide, when the death toll has increased to 703 and crossed a mark of 11,000 cases, Kerala has just 17 cases and three deaths. Had Kerala hesitated to act on time, it would have been yet another worst hit given its vulnerability, say experts.

One die of suspected swine flu in Pathanamthitta

Pathanamthitta: One person died of suspected swine flu in Pathanamthitta district on Thursday. However the district medical officer refused to confirm it as swine flu since the lab of a private medical college hospital where his blood sample was tested had not been recognised for virology test.

The deceased has been identified as a native of Othara. The patient who died in Pushpagiri Medical college hospital in Thiruvalla was admitted in the hospital on February 23 due to other diseases and had contracted fever on March 1.

State sees spike in H1N1 cases

Influenza A (H1N1) has been slowly claiming more lives in the State than usual, even though the infection normally peaks during monsoon.

The cumulative figures for H1N1 for the year shows that over 315 cases and 23 deaths, including six ante and post natal cases, have been reported.

Kerala has been doing good by sticking to its policy of testing for surveillance purposes only, says Amar Fettle, State nodal officer for H1N1. The State has since January, tested some 1,166 samples from all districts (public sector alone) and has reported 315 cases. ?All Disease Surveillance Officers have been given standing instructions to report on any unusual patterns in influenza-like illnesses or severe acute respiratory infections. H1N1 has been endemic here since 2010 and clinicians need to be alert to its possibility when they see patients with respiratory illnesses,? he says.

THRISSUR: A 45-year-old woman died here reportedly due to H1N1 disease on Sunday night. The deceased is Daisy, a resident of Varadiyam in Thrissur District. She had been undergoing treatment for nearly a month at a private hospital in Thrissur town. Health officials accompanied by local self government authorities had visited the locality a week ago and conducted an awareness campaign on the symptoms of the disease and precautionary measures to be taken against it. Daisy is survived by husband Kolambrath Jacob, daughter Alanteena, 24, and son Alvin, 21. The funeral was conducted at St Antony?s Church at Varadiyam near here on Monday afternoon.

Woman dies due to H1N1 in Alapuzha

Alapuzha: A woman died due to H1N1 in Alapuzha district on Saturday. The deceased is Sowmya, wife of Prasoon, hailing from Haripad. Sowmya was under treatment at the Vandanam Medical college hospital. Two more persons from the district are reported to be undergoing treatment for rat fever and dengue fever. With the death occurring due to H1N1, the health officials are maintaining a tight vigil.

Swine flu is biggest communicable disease killer in Kerala this year
H1N1 flu becomes the deadliest communicable disease in Kerala as it claims 50 lives.

With 50 deaths so far this year, H1N1 has emerged as the top killer in Kerala in the chart of communicable diseases. The spurt in H1N1 deaths this year goes with the national trend, according to the Kerala Health Department?s disease surveillance unit.

Number of swine flu deaths in Kerala rose from 17 cases and three deaths in 2014 to 421 confirmed cases and 50 deaths within just six months of the current year. The state had maximum number of swine flu casualty in 2010 which reported 90 deaths. In 2011, the state had only 10 deaths. In the next three years, the number of deaths hovered at single digits.

[h=1]Two more H1N1 cases reported[/h] The Health authorities have reported two new cases of H1N1 in the district on Wednesday . This takes the total number of cases to 22 since January.
The District Medical Officer Dr. N. K. Kuttappan told The Hindu that the sporadic cases are being reported in the district, though there is no alarming situation. People need to be a little more cautious while treating cough, cold and sore throat, he said. More number of cases were reported in July, he added.
Influenza virus is prevalent, but perhaps not in the virulent form, he said. Maximum number of 255 H1NI cases were reported in the district in 2010. There were only two cases in 2011, 42 in 2012, five in 2013 and no case in 2014. It had been fluctuating over the years in small numbers, he added.
Pregnant women, elderly, children, diabetic patients and those taking immuno-suppressants are categorised as high risk group for the air-borne disease because of their vulnerability with low immunity.

H1N1 alert sounded in Thrissur

After the death of a pregnant woman a few days back at Changaloor in Thrissur was confirmed due to Influenza A(H1N1), another woman too has succumbed to the infection in the area.

The spread of influenza has spread panic at Changaloor. The Health Department has started medical camps at Changaloor and nearby areas.

Jisha, 31, wife of Achandy Biju, of Changaloor, who was in the eighth month of pregnancy, died while under treatment at a private hospital here a few days ago.
