The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is alerting the public that the mumps may have been spread at recent wrestling meets.

KDHE says two individuals diagnosed with mumps were infected after attending meets in January and February. They say one may have been contagious while participating in a wrestling meet at Colby High School on February 4.

KDHE says the source has not been identified and additional students or adults may have spread the disease at other high school wrestling meets...

In a K-State Today Special Alert sent to all Kansas State students at 4:03 p.m., K-State confirmed three student cases of mumps since January. All three students were diagnosed within 21 days of each other.

According to the release, the university is notifying those who may have been ?in close contact? with any of the three students. All three students live off campus...

The number of mumps cases confirmed in Marshall County was at seven early this week, according to the Marshall County Health Department.

Investigation of potential cases is ongoing. Last week the agency reported five cases, and Marysville schools sent home an advisory letter to parents to watch for symptoms and to isolate potential cases...

...Kansas Department of Health and Environment issued a March 9 letter to the Kansas USA Wrestling organization, which is a community of youth wrestling events, to notify them that mumps transmission has been documented at several wrestling tournaments in Kansas.

KDHE ?has not identified all of the sources of these mumps infections,? the letter says. ?This means that additional, yet-to-be-identified kids or adults may still spread the disease at other wrestling events.?...

Mumps cases still increasing

Mumps cases jumped by five this past week as local health officials confirmed a total 12 cases had surfaced since the outbreak began a few weeks ago in Marshall County.

Tami Stowell, public health nurse at the Marshall County Health Department, said this is week four since the contagious illness was recorded here.

She said health officials are reviewing more possible cases...
