Pertussis, a disease better known as "whooping cough" because of the severe coughing fits it causes, is making resurgence in Kentucky with recent outbreaks in central and northern parts of the state.
According to the Kentucky Department of Health, 113 cases of the infectious respiratory disease have been reported this year, including outbreaks in Madison, Estill and Fayette counties. The statewide numbers are on pace to surpass last year's total of 168 and continue a spike of higher numbers that closely follow a nationwide trend...

The United States is on course for a record year for pertussis, more commonly known as whooping cough, and there are outbreaks being reported tonight in parts of our viewing area.
More than a dozen cases in recent weeks have been reported in Madison and Estill Counties, according to the respective health departments there.
?We?ve never had this many cases over the last 5 years,? Judy Collins, Bluegrass Region Epidemiologist says. ?We?re in the double digits now, so it's above and beyond what we would normally expect for this time of the year...?

State health department says 381 cases of whooping cough puts disease at epidemic levels
The state Department of Public Health says whooping cough is now at epidemic levels. Department officials told Amanda Stephenson of WTVQ-TV in Lexington that 381 cases of the virus have been confirmed so far in 2012. The Lexington-Fayette County Health Department is reporting 50 cases so far this year. That's double the 26 cases they'd seen in the previous five years.
