Louisiana health dept to colleges, schools: Watch for mumps

The state health department says at least six Louisiana State University students have come down with the mumps, and any others with swollen, tender salivary glands should see a doctor and stay home.

Loyola University?s Office of Emergency Management announced March 10 that there is one confirmed case of mumps on the school?s campus.

A student who attended Loyola?s noon Ash Wednesday mass later discovered that they have mumps and immediately began trying to contact other attendees of the mass service...

Department of Health reports 17 cases of mumps found in Louisiana

LAFAYETTE, La (KLFY) ? The Louisiana Department of Health has confirmed there are 17 cases of mumps in Louisiana. Dr. Tina Stefanski says most of the cases have cropped up at LSU in Baton Rouge.

Dr. Stefanski of the Louisiana Office of Public Health (OPH) says mumps can easily spread through coughing, sneezing, eating food or touching objects that have come into contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person.

OPH reports that one third of infected individuals have mild symptoms and may not realize they?re ill. ?Maybe sick up to a couple of weeks but most people recover without the more serious symptoms that we see associated with mumps,? says Dr. Stefanski...

Mumps outbreak at LSU now up to 20 cases

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Louisiana is in the midst of a small mumps outbreak. At the heart of that outbreak is the campus of LSU. The first cases were reported by the Louisiana Department of Health around March 16, following a major outbreak in Arkansas.

The challenge, per assistant state health officer, Dr. Parham Jaberi, is that someone infected with the mumps virus may not show symptoms for up to three weeks. "It becomes a challenge because once we identify the problem through public health, we're playing catch up,? said Dr. Jaberi...

...The university has reported about 20 cases of mumps so far. Jaberi said there?s been a handful of cases in other areas of the state as well...
