The spread of HPAI H5N1 viruses among dairy cattle beyond the USA, such as in Egypt, could have serious consequences. In Egypt, where the HPAI H5N1 virus is endemic, a published risk assessment or surveillance of the current situation regarding the H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b has not been conducted among cattle on farms. The first HPAI H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b viruses were identified in domestic ducks and wild birds at live bird markets in Egypt in 2021.[SUP]4[/SUP] Surprisingly, H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b virus was detected in wild rats collected from a rural area in Giza, Egypt, near poultry farms, markets, and backyard flocks.[SUP]5[/SUP] Moreover, studies have shown that goat, buffalo, and cattle serums from Egypt contain anti-H5N1 antibodies.[SUP]6[/SUP]​
