Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is widely recognized as a serious threat to public health responsible of a broad ranging of infections, from minor skin infections to bacteriemia and pneumonia. Methicillin resistance in S. aureus is dependent upon the acquisition of the mecA gene. MRSA are resistant to most beta-lactam antibiotics and mutations in the PBP2a have been described conferring resistance to beta-lactam antimicrobial agents used for MRSA treatment such as ceftaroline and ceftobiprole[SUP]1[/SUP] .

We describe the susceptibility and the genetic profiles of two Staphylococcus aureus isolated from blood cultures that were mecA positive by PCR but had a MSSA phenotype upon susceptibility testing. Blood culture bottles were incubated in the BD Bactec™ FX Blood culture System. Bacterial identification was done directly from the blood culture bottles by MALDI-TOF MS (Bruker Biotyper). A fragment of the mecA gene was amplified using primers 5’-ACGAGTAGATGCTCAATATAA-3’ and 5’-AGTTCTGCAGTACCGGATTTGC-3’ and sequenced using BigDye™ Terminator v3.1 Cycle Sequencing Kit (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA).
