Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N2 in Italy, Epidemiological situation

On 31th August 2012 the National Reference Center for Avian Influenza, of the Istituto Zooprofilattico delle Venezie confirmed the presence of an H5N2 LPAI subtype in a meat turkey farm in the Brescia province (Lombardia Region), located in a Densely Populated Poultry Area (DPPA).

Subsequently, other outbreaks were detected in the Mantova province (Lombardia Region) and in the Veneto Region.

Considering the epidemiological situation in these Regions (Lombardia and Veneto) the Italian Ministry of Health and Regional Health Authorities have taken the following sanitary measures to control and eradicate the disease:
  • Ban on the movement of live birds
  • Regulation of the restocking of meat turkey farms
  • Intensive monitoring of all industrial and commercial farms in High Risk Areas
