Low prevalence of superbugs in Delhi hospitals: Study

New Delhi A survey across three government hospitals in the National Capital has found a “very low prevalence” of antibiotic resistant bacteria, termed as superbugs, in ICUs.
However, in a bid to allay fears, Delhi Health minister Dr A K Walia, said that there was nothing alarming about the findings.
The study was conducted by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) across ICUs in Ram Manohar Lohia hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalay(CNBC).
The findings show that the prevalence of the Carbapenem resistant bacteria was in the “safe range” of 0.04-0.08 percent.
According to Dr. Shashi Khare, Additional Director General of NCDC, “These levels are very normal for across the world. Carbapenem is a generation of extremely powerful antibiotics. We also studied water and sewage samples from near the hospitals, and no antibiotic resistant bacteria was found in the samples.”
Putting in a word of caution, Dr. Walia said, “It goes without saying that caution should be exercised in the use of antibiotics. However, this survey has shown that we need to regulate the indiscriminatory use of antibiotics.”
The survey was commissioned after British medical jounral the Lancet had reported the presence of the NDM-1 gene, which makes bacteria resistant to antibiotics, in the water supply in parts of New Delhi.
