Low pathogenicity avian influenza in Italy: the epidemiological situation (2008)
04 February 2008

THE EMILIA ROMAGNA REGION OUTBREAK
The CONSELICE (RA) H7N1 LPAI outbreak
On 26 January 2008 the National Reference Laboratory confirmed the isolation of a Type A, sub-type H7N1 LPAI virus in a tracheal swabs taken from guinea fowls present in a dealer farm located in the municipality of Conselice (RA) in Emilia Romagna Region.
On 22 January 2008 a dealer farm was subjected to premovement tests carried out in the frame of the regional avian influenza monitoring plan.
In the farm 1056 guinea fowls and 140 hens were present and showed no clinical symptoms at the moment of sampling. The samples taken from hens gave negative results.
Another farm of the same owner, located not far from the oubreak, that reared 3900 guinea fowls was considered as a contact holding. The guinea fowls of both farms came from a holding farm located in Massalombarda (RA). On 28 January 2008 all birds (5096) present in both holdings were stamped out and, on 29 January 2008, cleaning and disinfection procedures were completed.
Preliminary epidemiological inquiry showed that, on 4 January ’08, the owner of the farm in Massalombarda sold 1.300 guinea fowls to Lucera (FG) in South of Italy.
According to Concil Directive 94/2005/EC, eradication measures were stablished:
- Resticted zone (1 Km) and monitoring zone (10 Km) (fig.2);
- Laboratory tests are carring out on commercial poultry holdings;
- Movement restrictions;
- Fairs, markets, shows or other gatherings of birds were prohibited, unless authorised by the competent authority.
Moreover, additional tests (virological and serological) are ongoing in all the farms of the same owner of the holding located in Massalombarda (RA).
The phylogenetic analysis (fig. 3) of the haemoagglutinin of the strain isolated in January ’08 (A/guinea fowl/Italy/407/2008) formed one cluster (range homology 97-98,7%) with viruses H7N7 isolated in 2006 A\Shoveler\Italy\377-6\2006 e A\Mallard\Italy\497-35\2006) and some H7 isolated in 2007 (A/mallard/Italy/6103-5/2007-H7N1, A/mallard/Italy/6103-12/2007-H7N3 e A/shoveler/Italy/6323-11/2007-H7N3) from wild birds. Moreover, all the viruses H7N3 LPAI isolated in 2007 from domestic bird are NOT related to the the strain A/guineafowl/Italy/407/2008/H7N1 isolated in January ’08.
The Neuraminidase analysis revealed a high homology (97,9%) with the virus H5N1 LPAI A/mallard/Italy/3401/2005 and only 91,8% of homology with the strain A/mallard/Italy/6103-5/2007.
