Bhopal, Apr 2:
Effective measures have been taken by the state Public Health and Family Welfare Department to check malaria. As many as 40 malaria units are implementing Vector-borne Malaria Control Programme in all the 50 districts of the state. Priority is being given to malaria surveillance work, sprinkling, setting up of fever treatment centres and release of larva-eating fish in water sources.
Under the scheme for early detection and treatment of malaria, 44 thousand 99 fever treatment centres have been set up in the remote villages of the state. Suspected malaria patients are checked at these centres and those found suffering from the disease are given chloroquine medicine. Most of these centres are run by ASHA workers. Besides, such centres have also been set up at anganwadis and Janswasth Rakshak. During the period from the month of January to December 2010, as many as 87.69 lakh blood slides were taken to detect malaria as against the target of 87.89 lakh, which was 99.77 per cent of the target.
Determination of malaria is done as per the norms set by the Union Government. One of such parameters is Annual Parasitic Incidence (API), which is counted as malaria cases per thousand population. The API in the state had come down in the state 1.49 in 2008, 1.22 in 2009 and 1.13 by December 15, 2010.
Malaria is also been controlled in the state with the help of organic system. Under this method, larva-eating fish like gamboosia and guppy are release in permanent and temporary water bodies. Fifty-eight lakh such fish were released in reservoirs during the year 2009 and 38 lakh in the year 2010.
