Two H1N1 cases in first week of June: BMC

MUMBAI: Two cases of H1N1 influenza were reported in the first week of June, said BMC officials on Tuesday.

The patients, both of whom are in their 40s, were treated at the civic-run Kasturba Hospital. They have already been discharged and are doing well, said head of BMC's epidemiology cell Dr Mangala Gomare.

"Sporadic cases of H1N1 were reported even in the previous months. Monsoon does not lead to any spike in H1N1 cases," said Gomare.

At the state-level, about 350 cases were reported between January and June 13. Eighty-three people died due to H1N1 in the same period, said state epidemiologist Dr Pradeep Awate. Most of the victims were from Pune and neighbouring areas. No deaths have been reported from Mumbai so far.

High-risk patients such as those with underlying ailments, the elderly, pregnant women and children should remain alert and seek treatment at the earliest, said experts. The situation in the state is much better this year as compared to previous years when Maharashtra saw the highest number of deaths as well as positive cases

, said Awate. The capital city is the worst affected this year having reported over 1500 cases so far.

84 in state die of H1N1 in 6 months

MUMBAI: Swine flu has claimed as many as 84 lives in the state in the last six months.

Though only one person from Mira Road-Bhayander and one from Thane succumbed to H1N1 influenza this year, experts fear that more Mumbaikars may fall victim as hundreds from the city travel every day to Pune and Nashik, which have recorded seven and 15 deaths so far. Pimpri Chinchwad tops the list of areas with maximum swine flu deaths, recording a toll of 18. Last year, 135 people from the state died of H1N1.

State health officials feel most of the deaths were due to negligence on the part of patients or that some of them had a medical history, like respiratory problems and high BP, which worsened their condition.The swine flu has reared its ugly head in Maharashtra with vengeance. As many as 84 persons succumbed to H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu between January and June 2013. According to official statistics available with TOI, 18 people died in Pimpri Chinchwad, seven in Pune rural, and 15 in Nashik. Correspondingly 135 people died due to swine flu between January and December 2012.

Swine flu toll in Nagpur hospitals reaches 18 this year


NAGPUR: Though swine flu is no longer considered a potential mass killer, it has killed 18 of the 46 positive cases detected in various city hospitals since January this year. These deaths include a woman from Quetta in Pakistan who was in city to meet her relatives and died at Life Care hospital in Lakadganj on March 29, two patients from Betul in Madhya Pradesh, seven Amravati district, one from Wardha and three from Chandrapur.

A 50-year-old woman from city became the 18th patient to die this year of swine flu on Wednesday afternoon. This patient, Jyoti Ingle, was under treatment at Mure Memorial Hospital (MMH) since Monday and was reported H1N1 positive on Tuesday. The hospital is learnt to have treated her for pneumonia before that. She was put on Tamiflu since then and shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday afternoon. The doctors at GMCH declared her brought dead at 3.30 pm. Dr Sushma Dongre, the MMH medical superintendent, told TOI this patient was formally discharged from the hospital at 11.30am but was still in the hospital till 2.30pm on ventilator when the ambulance arrived and took her to GMCH.

PUNE: A 59-year-old woman from Dhayari Gaarmal died of swine flu at a city hospital late on Tuesday evening. This takes the city's H1N1 death toll to 25 so far this year.

Nine people with the infection are currently being treated at different hospitals in the city. Six of them are in critical condition and have been put on ventilator support.

62-year-old dies of swine flu

Pune: Dattoba Mahatre, 62, a resident of Mulshi tehsil in Pune district, died of the H1N1 virus (swine flu) on Tuesday. This is the first death due to swine flu since May this year. He had fever and cough since July 13 and complained of breathlessness on July 17. He was part of the Palkhi procession that travelled from Alandi to Pandharpur. He was given supportive treatment for his ailment and first admitted to Sanjeevan hospital at Pirangut and then to Sanjeevan hospital on Karve Road. His throat swab samples tested positive for the H1N1 virus on July 22 and he died due to acute respiratory distress syndrome, a release issued here said. There have been a total of 24 deaths since January this year ? 7 in PMC and 17 in PCMC area. Four persons are currently on ventilator support.

The deadly swine flu claimed two lives on Tuesday, taking the death toll to 25 since January this year. Authorities said Mulshi resident Dattoba Mahatare (62) succumbed to the H1N1 virus on Tuesday afternoon at Sanjeevan Hospital after testing positive on Monday, while Dhayari resident Rukhminia Chakankar (45) succumbed to the virus at Poona Hospital in the night.

Following the loss of lives, the medical health officer of the PMC pinned the blame on private hospitals, accusing them of negligence in detecting and treating H1N1 cases.

?Private hospitals often turn a blind eye to patients showing H1N1 symptoms and start treating them for viral fever. This delay in treatment then puts the patient in a critical condition. In many cases, patients have died because of the hold-up in treatment, which is crucial if it extends to less than three days,? said ST Pardeshi, PMC?s medical officer of health.

According to PMC officials, there is a spurt of H1N1 cases reported in July and thousands of people are being screened daily at PMC centres. ?There is an increase in influenza cases during monsoon. This is a normal trend,? said Mandeep Chadha, senior scientist at the National Institute of Virology.

H1N1: PMC calls upon docs, patients to become alert

With two H1N1 deaths reported in Pune over the last three days and six patients already on ventilator support, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said it is time that both doctors and patients became more alert about the deadly viral infection.

In fact, not just the critical patients? load but the number of positive cases within corporation limits has increased as well. In the recent deaths, it was noticed that in cases of persons suspected to be suffering from H1N1 infection, Tamiflu treatment was delayed. As compared to just six H1N1 cases in May and two in June, 14 confirmed cases were reported in July of which nine patients are admitted to various hospitals.

PMC?s acting medical officer of health, Dr ST Pardeshi, said it has been noticed that after the scare of swine flu died down, both citizens and doctors have become lax and are not suspecting that patients might be suffering from the viral infection.

?Initially when the infection was at its peak, we noticed that people would pro-actively report for swab tests, insist on Tamiflu and even doctors would not take a chance. Now we are seeing that after initial days are past and severity increases or infection continues, people are being suspected to be suffering from H1N1 influenza.

From time to time, we have asked the medical community to be alert. But if the positive cases keep increasingly getting reported and it comes to our notice that they continue to get detected late, we will have to issue fresh directives to doctors as well as public to look out for these infections,? he said.

The last two H1N1 deaths were reported on July 23 with a 62-year-old from Mulshi taluka admitted to Sanjeevan Hospital and another 45-year-old male from Haveli taluka admitted to Poona Hospital for H1N1 treatment, both succumbing to H1N1 infection after developing acute respiratory distress syndrome.

Satara man succumbs to H1N1


PUNE: A 45-year-old man from Satara district succumbed to swine flu at a hospital here on Friday, taking the city's H1N1 death toll to 26 this year. This is the third swine flu casualty that has occurred in Pune city in the last four days.

The deceased, Udaysingh Uttamrao Bhosale, developed influenza-like symptoms such as intermittent fever, cough, cold and weakness on July 12. "Despite the symptoms, the victim did not seek medical treatment for the first seven days," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health (MoH), Pune Municipal Corporation.

His condition worsened and he developed breathlessness, following which he was admitted to a private hospital in Phaltan in Satara district on July 19, but was referred and admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune on the same day given his deteriorating condition. put on ventilator support on July 20. His throat swab was sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) that tested positive for swine flu on July 24. He developed organ failure and died at 5.30am on Friday.

Hingoli man dies of H1N1; first victim this monsoon

AURANGABAD: A 35-year-old man from Swarkheda village in Hingoli district died of swine flu at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nanded, on Saturday evening. This is the first swine flu death in Aurangabad division this monsoon.

The deceased, Ashok Panditrao Pole (35), worked as an auto driver in the village.

Satish Runwal, medical officer, Hingoli taluka said, "Initially, Pole was undergoing treatment for viral infection at a private hospital for around 10 days. But when his condition worsened, he approached the civil hospital in the village on July 23. He was admitted to GMCH on July 24 with worsening symptoms, where investigations revealed that he was infected with the H1N1 virus."

Swine flu claims 19th victim of year

NAGPUR: A 42-year-old city man became the 19th victim of swine flu this year. Two others have also tested positive for the infection.

The deceased, R Thumre, was a resident of Manewada and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital on Central Avenue. He was already in a very bad condition when his samples were sent to the swine flu testing centre of the city's Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH).

Sharp rise in H1N1 infection rate in July

PUNE: City-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) has advised people to stay alert and take precautionary measures to ward off swine flu as the H1N1 infection rate has gone up considerably this month.

The infection rate of the H1N1 virus has touched 13% in July as against 1.1% in June. This means, of the total suspected H1N1 patients, 13% are testing positive, scientists from NIV said here on Tuesday.

Samindra Gandhave (50), a resident of Satara, had been suffering from fever and cough since July 20. Gandhave was undergoing treatment at Kalaj and Lonand and was later referred to KEM Hospital in Pune to avail better treatment. She was on ventilator support from July 25 and succumbed to the virus on Wednesday due to acute respiratory distress syndrome.

In another case, 48-year-old Pandurang Phadtare from Pune's Purandar district was suffering from fever with chills from July 23. Being a diabetic, he was on regular treatment and was referred to Noble Hospital as his condition deteriorated. He succumbed to the virus on Tuesday.

A 45-year-old man hailing from Baramati became the first person to die of swine flu infection this month in a Pune hospital.
According to the civic officials, the patient died at Swargate?s Sahyadri hospital at 6.25pm. They claimed that The patient delayed treatment for three days. His swab test was done on July 27, and it was confirmed to be H1N1 positive by July 30. He was put on Tamiflu treatment but his condition worsened and he had to be shifted on a ventilator. PMC officials mentioned that he died because of H1N1 pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome.

PUNE: A 34-year-old man from Baramati died of swine flu at a city hospital on Sunday, taking the number of people who died of the virus in the city to 30 this year.

Schools take measures to keep swine flu at bay

With the increase in number of swine flu cases in the city, several schools have started taking precautionary measures. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) education department said they would issue guidelines to schools by Thursday.

"We have started taking precautionary measures to fight swine flu. We have asked parents to give tissue papers, sanitisers and masks to their children when they come to school. For the past two days, we have been making students wear masks in the school. We have made masks compulsory from Wednesday onwards," said an official from the Bishop's School.

"We have asked parents to keep their children at home if they do not feel well. When children suffer from minor cold and cough, parents send them to schools after giving them medicines as they fear they might lose on studies," said Sujata Mallic, Principal, St Mary's School.

PUNE: A 61-year-old man from Baramati died of swine flu complications, taking the city's H1N1 death toll to 31 so far, this year.

At present, 17 people infected with the virus are undergoing treatment in different city hospitals. Of them, the condition of nine patients is critical and they have been put on ventilator support.
