A Suspected Swine Flu Case in Nashik

Nashik, May 19 (PTI) A 60-year-old man has been admitted to the Nashik Civil Hospital for a suspected swine flu infection after he developed breathing problem.

Hospital authorities said that presently he was on ventilator and samples have been sent to laboratory in Pune to ascertain if it was a case of swine flu.

Govind D Tandale was admitted to the general ward of the hospital on May 16, and considering the symptoms he was shifted to a special ward yesterday.

Authorities assured that there was no swine flu "epidemic" in the city.

Swine flu kills one, 4 more cases in Maharashtra

Swine flu has returned to Maharashtra with the disease claiming a life in Nashik even as four persons have been reported positive in the state last week.

Shama Kushalkar (29) died due to swine flu at the Nashik Civil hospital on May 26, two days after she was admitted there. Of the four persons who have been reported positive three are from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad while one is from Nashik.

One more tests positive for H1N1

PUNE: One more person tested positive for H1N1 flu in the city on Monday. With this, the total number of swine flu cases has gone up to six in the city, since April this year.

Also, the number of throat swab samples arriving at the National Institute of Virology has now gone up to 45 per day from the earlier one-two samples every day.

"The throat swab samples coming to NIV are mainly from Pune, Nanded and Nashik," said Mandeep Chadha, deputy director, NIV. "These are sporadic cases and there is no need to panic as the rate of positive cases is low. We are constantly monitoring the situation," he added.

"The case of the 36-year-old man, who tested positive on Monday, is the only one this month. The patient is a resident of Magarpatta City in Hadapsar. Of the other five cases, three were registered in May and two in April," said S T Pardeshi, assistant health officer, PMC.

"The three cases in May were from a city-based hospital. A doctor and two nurses had contracted the disease while treating a swine flu patient," Pardeshi said.

Since most of us have developed a natural immunity due to extended exposure to swine flu and some have vaccine-induced immunity, finding swine flu antibodies in blood is normal, but in such cases, the throat swab would not test positive. Hence, if a person's throat swab tests positive, it means that he or she has contracted the disease, Chadha said.

2 patients test positive for H1NI virus

Two patients in the city tested positive for the H1N1 virus, which causes swine flu, on Monday. The last confirmed swine flu case was reported in the city in January, said Dr AH Bandiwadekar, executive health officer, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Civic officials confirmed that a 37-year-old woman from Chandivli and a three-year-old girl from Tardeo have tested positive for the virus this monsoon.

Dr Abhay Chowdhary, director of Haffkine Institute, Parel said the institute received the swab samples of both the patients last week. ?The swab samples of the woman and the child were sent from Nair Hospital and LH Hiranandani Hospital at Powai respectively. The positive report came in on Monday,? he added.

Dr Chowdhary said that during the monsoon they expected to see more swine flu patients as the virus becomes active during the period.

?The two patients were treated on an outpatient basis. There was no need to isolate the patients as the virus is already in the air,? said Dr Daksha Shah, head of the epidemiology cell, BMC.

She added that the number of swine flu cases in the city is not alarming compared to last year. According to statistics from Directorate of Health Services, 23 patients have been suspected of having contracted the virus since April until June 19 and were administered Tamiflu.

3-year-old swine flu patient in ICU

A three-year-old girl, who is one of the two patients who tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Monday, is in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Nair Hospital. ?The patient has been administered Tamiflu and we are monitoring her health in the ICU,? said Dr RV Rananavare, dean, Nair Hospital. On Wednesday, the Hindustan Times had reported that two patients in the city tested positive for the H1N1 virus, which causes swine flu. Civic officials had confirmed that a 37-year-old woman from Chandivli and the three-year-old girl from Tardeo had tested positive for the virus.

Suspected swine flu death in Nashik district

Malegaon (Maha), July 10 (PTI) A 21-year-old woman is suspected to have died of swine flu at a civil hospital here this morning, health officials said. According to Resident Medical Officer Dr Kishor Dange, the deceased, Nutan Khairnar, from Navi Bej in taluka Kalwan of Nashik district, was suffering from cold, fever, besides having breathing problems. She was first admitted to a private nursing home at Satana and was later shifted to Malegaon 4 days ago. Dr Dange said that symptoms of swine flu were present in her and samples have been sent for tests. "Samples like throat-swab and others were taken and sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for further examination. Man tests positive for H1N1


PUNE: A 61-year-old man from Vishrantwadi has tested positive for H1N1 influenza.

"His throat swab sample, sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV),, tested positive on July 7," said an official of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The man has various other conditions like hypertension, ischemic heart disease and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). "He is currently being treated at a private hospital and is recovering fast," officials said.

Since April this year there have been seven positive cases registered within the city limits.

"The situation is under control, we are monitoring it closely," said R R Pardeshi, health chief of the PMC. "With the monsoon underway, the weather will be cooler and there are likely to be more cases of swine flu than during the summer," a health official said.

Two people test positive for swine flu in Mumbai


Mumbai: The dreaded H1N1 virus that has claimed many lives over the past two years, has reared its ugly head once again in Mumbai.

Yesterday, two people in Mumbai tested positive for the virus. After throat swabs were sent to Haffkine institute, pathological tests conducted on the samples diagnosed that the swine flu virus had infected a 37-year-old woman from Chandivli and a three-year-old girl.

The two diagnoses follow close on the heels of similar cases in Pune and Nashik. Alarmed by the re-emergence of the disease, the state health department had a closed-door meeting with experts last morning at the Mantralaya to think of measures that can safeguard the city from another pandemic.

The state health department had issued detailed precautionary guidelines to be adopted when the outbreak of the disease assumed the pandemic proportions two years back.

The state had even roped in private hospitals, which had prepared special quarantine wards for those afflicted with the disease.

Dr Abhay Chaudhary, director of Haffkine institute, said, "We have received samples from two city hospitals.

Tests were conducted in our Bio Safety level (BSL) 2 + labs, and the samples tested positive for the H1N1 virus. There is no use panicking, as the virus is here to stay.

1 tests positive for H1N1

PUNE: A 31-year-old doctor from Sinhagad road tested positive for H1N1 influenza on Wednesday. With this, the number of infected patients within the city limits has gone up to eight since April this year.

"Her throat swab sample tested positive on Wednesday. She is recovering fast. As a precautionary measure, all the family members have been administrated preventive medicines," said a civic official.

The woman was isolated at the Naidu Hospital and is likely to be discharged either tonight or tomorrow, depending on her recovery.

The 61-year-old man from Vishrantwadi who had tested positive for swine flu on July 7 is also doing a fast recovery. "His stay in the hospital has been prolonged as he has other co-morbid conditions. He will be discharged in a day or two," the official said.

Yerawada woman tests positive for H1N1

Two test positive for H1N1, one critical

PUNE: A 29-year-old woman from Pandharpur and a 30-year-old man from Magarpatta tested positive for swine flu on Thursday. The condition of the woman is critical and is being treated at the isolation ICU of KEM hospital. With this, the number of infected patients in the city has gone up to 11 since April. The highest number of cases, five, was reported this month.

"The woman has been put on ventilator since she was admitted on July 18. The man from Magarpatta is taking treatment at a private hospital in Hadapsar, and is likely to be discharged in a day," said a civic body official.

The woman developed the symptoms from July 10. "She didn't see a doctor till July 15. As her condition worsened, she was admitted to a private hospital in Solapur. The doctors put her on ventilator as her condition further deteriorated. She was moved to the KEM hospital in a critical condition on July 18," the official said.

KEM hospital's medical officials elaborated: "The x-ray report showed that she had developed acute respiratory distress syndrome. We suspected swine flu and sent the throat swab for testing which showed the presence of H1N1 influenza virus."

The man from Magarpatta developed the symptoms from July 15. "He consulted a private doctor, who administered Tamiflu. But upon complain of weakness, he was admitted to the hospital on July 19. His throat swab tested positive for swine flu on Thursday."
