3 test positive for H1N1; schools being checked


PUNE: Three people, including a student from a school in Pune Camp, tested positive for swine flu in the city on Thursday. As many as 53 students from different schools have tested positive for the contagion so far since April this year.

Health officials are checking up the schools where these children study. In 2009, scores of students suffered the infection triggering closure of many institutions. The health officials does not want to take chances now.

"We are keeping track of every student found infected with swine flu. The schools where they study are asked to initiate all precautionary measures to prevent the spread. The three-year-old child who was found positive on Thursday is also a student of a school in Camp. He is being treated at the Naidu Hospital," said S T Pardeshi, PMC medical officer of health.

As per the PMC health department's record, five H1N1 infected students were reported in April. After that there was a brief lull till July. The infection among students again resurfaced when schools opened in July. There were 11 infected students in August, 19 in September and 14 in October. Last month, three students were found to be infected.

Total 500 people have tested positive and 34 have lost their lives due to H1N1 since April this year.

Baby dies of swine flu, toll touches 35

A one-and-a-half-year-old baby from Lonavala died due to swine flu (H1N1 virus) at Ruby Hall Clinic here on Thursday. While the swine flu toll has gone up to 35 since April this year, this is the first death in the paediatric age group, Dr S T Pardeshi, acting health chief of Pune Municipal Corporation said.

The family stays in Kusgaon Budruk in Lonavala. The child had cold and cough since November 25, it was only on December 7 that the girl was taken to the local doctor for treatment. She, however, was breathless and did not respond to the treatment following which she was shifted to Bhide Hospital at Navi Peth on December 9.

While the baby was intubated, her throat swab was sent on December 12 for the H1N1 virus infection test.

Note - Maharashtra's Directorate of Health services stopped publishing H1N1 reports and pulled the archived material without explanation on October 27th. This was often the only source for fatalities & cases in Maharashtra outside of Pune and Mumbai. Since then we have been relying on media reports only. At least 10 of 13 media reported fatalities since then have been from Pune. Prior to October 27th, Pune accounted for about a quarter of all H1N1 deaths in Maharashtra. A similar pattern since then would suggest that tens of other deaths in the state are not being counted in this thread.

In addition, a recent study suggests that confirmed H1N1 fatalities amount to only 2-3% of total H1N1 fatalities and this without including fatalities due to any other strains. Given all that, the 131 fatalities recorded in the thread are really a tiny fraction of the probably more than 10,000 flu deaths in Maharashtra this year. - Ro

3-year-old from Hadapsar succumbs to swine flu


A three-year-old girl from Handewadi, Hadapsar died of swine flu (H1N1 virus) at Aditya Birla Hospital, Chinchwad on Thursday. Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporation’s health officer Dr Milind Jawale said, this is the 12th death reported from Pimpri since April this year. There were three deaths in January, February and March respectively. In Pune the toll since April has touched 35.

The child was unwell and had cough and cold from December 13. She developed fever and turned breathless by December 17. Officials said, she was admitted to Noble Hospital at Hadapsar on December 17 after which she was shifted to Jehangir Hospital on December 18. However, she was shifted to Aditya Birla Hospital where she succumbed to the swine flu virus on December 20. Her throat swab for the H1N1 virus had tested positive on December 19.

H1N1 patient in critical condition


PUNE: An Alandi Road resident (42) suffering from swine flu became critically ill and has been put on ventilator support at a private hospital, officials said on Friday.

"The man was put on ventilator support at the Ruby Hall Clinic on Thursday. He tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Friday," said civic medical officer of health S T Pardeshi.

The man started developing symptoms on December 25. "He initially had body ache and weakness. His condition became worse and he started suffering from breathlessness with chills and fever from December 27," Pardeshi said.

In view of the symptoms and associated illnesses, he had been put on Tamiflu medicines right from the day of admission to the hospital. "His condition became critical. He was intubated and put on control mode ventilator at 10 am on Thursday," said Pardeshi.

40-year-old man dies of swine flu

PUNE: A 40-year-old man died of swine flu in Pune city on January 24, the civic health officials confirmed on Friday. The victim also had developed altered sensorium among other usual symptoms. Altered sensorium means limitations on or problems with the brain's ability to receive, process or interpret sensory information.

"This is the first swine flu casualty this year. As many as 36 people have succumbed to the H1N1 infection since April last year," said S T Pardeshi, medical officer of health, Pune Municipal Corporation.
