4 swine flu deaths in city out of five in state so far

PUNE: Despite a drop in the number of H1N1 cases, the high mortality rate (from 8% in 2012 to 25% this year so far) has left doctors and experts worried.

Of the 21 cases till April this year, five have succumbed to the infection. Of these, Nagpur accounted for four and Kolhapur one.

The first swine flu casualty of this year occurred at Wockhardt Hospital in Nagpur on February 6. Sachin R Gosewade (41) died on February 9, a 4-year-old epilepsy patient died of swine flu on March 9, a 33-year-old woman died at the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur on April 17 and a 55-year-old woman from Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) died at Wockhardt Hospital in Nagpur on May 3.

Woman with swine flu critical; 9th case this year


PUNE: A 43-year-old woman from Loni Kalbhor in Pune district, who is undergoing treatment for swine flu at a private hospital in the city, has been put on ventilator support after her condition became critical.

"She developed influenza like symptoms including fever, dry cough on May 26. On June 2, she was rushed to a private hospital in Wagholi after she complained of breathlessness. The woman was referred to the Ruby Hall Clinic the same evening, where she was put on ventilator support. She was diagnosed with swine flu on June 5. She has no other co-morbid conditions," said a health official from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

A total of nine people have been diagnosed with swine flu in the city this year. "No swine flu deaths have been reported so far. In April, a two-and-a-half year old boy from Phursungi was diagnosed with swine flu and was the last patient to be put on ventilator support. He was admitted to the KEM Hospital on April 15 and was discharged on April 23," the official said.

First death by swine flu this year, Health officials want people alert against H1N1 in Pune

Pune: Civic officials have advised people to stay alert as the first serious case of swine flu infection was reported this month. With pre-monsoon showers lashing the city and doctors warning against the rise in viral infections such as Influenza A, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) authorities state that though swine flu infection has become endemic, it is still a life- threatening infection like dengue fever. the civic body also advises Punekars to take precautionary measures to ward off swine flu. The disease is back into focus after a 43-year-old woman from Loni Kalbhor in Pune district was diagnosed as swine flu positive on June 5 and was put on ventilator support after her condition became critical, however she has passed away on Monday, 16 June.

Year's second swine flu death at GMCH

NAGPUR: A 35-year-old woman, Sushma Mishra, who died in the ICU of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Saturday, has been found to be swine flu positive. This is apparently the second swine flu death from January this year at GMCH.

Dr Arun Humne, head of the preventive and social medicine department and nodal officer for swine flu conformed to TOI that the patient was H1N1 positive. However, sources in GMCH say the patient's family may not be even aware of her positive status. Her sample (now being tested at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College) was not sent for testing till Tuesday afternoon. The sample sent on Tuesday morning was reported to be positive in the afternoon.

60-year-old with H1N1 put on ventilator support

PUNE: A 60-year-old man from Purandar taluka in Pune district, who is undergoing treatment for swine flu at a private hospital in the city, has been on ventilator support since July 18 after his condition deteriorated.

This is the second patient in Pune who became critical soon after being diagnosed with the H1N1 this month. A 43-year-old woman had succumbed to the infection at a private hospital in the city on July 16.

"The man developed influenza like symptoms from July 10. Despite being ill, he delayed in taking treatment for first three days. His condition worsened and he developed breathlessness. He was rushed to KEM hospital in Pune on July 13," said a health official from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Four swine flu patients critical

PUNE: Four swine flu patients admitted to different hospitals in the city are critically ill and have been put on ventilator support. Two of them are from the city (Kondhwa and Pimpri) while the other two are from adjoining districts who were brought here for tertiary care.

As many as 17 people have tested positive in Pune so far. Of them, two died. Both hailed from rural parts of the district.

Among the four seriously ill, a 62-year-old woman lives in Kondhwa. She has hypertension and was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism.She developed symptoms like cold and dry cough around July 23. Her condition worsened around July 26 as she developed fever with chills along with breathlessness. She was first taken to Inamdar Hospital in Fatimanagar on August 6 which in turn referred her to Prayag Hospital. Her throat swab tested positive for swine flu at a private designated laboratory on August 2. Her condition later worsened and she has been put on ventilator support. She delayed seeking treatment for four days.

Another patient, a 47-year-old man, a resident of village Shirol in Sangli district, developed symptoms around July 22. Initially, he had throat pain, dry cough, and mild breathlessness. He was taken to a private hospital in Miraj which in turn referred him to Ruby Hall Clinic which got him admitted on July 27. He had severe breathlessness at the time of admission. He was put on pressure control mode ventilator support. He also delayed seeking treatment for three days. His throat swab was sent to the National Institute of Virology which confirmed the infection on July 27.

Pimpri youth dies of swine flu

PUNE: A 23-year-old man from Pimpri succumbed to swine flu at a private hospital here, taking the city's H1N1 death toll to three so far this year.

Three more swine flu patients are currently critical and have been put on ventilator support at different hospitals in the city. The state's swine flu death toll has gone up to 15 so far this year.

The deceased, Swapnil Bhausaheb Sable, was a resident of Pimprigaon in Pimpri Chinchwad. He developed symptoms like cold, fever and throat pain on August 4. His condition worsened in the next three days as he developed breathlessness. He was first taken to a hospital in Aundh, which referred him to Sahyadri Hospital in Bopodi, where he was admitted on August 10. He was later put on pressure control mode ventilator support. His throat swab tested positive for swine flu on August 13.

Two more succumb to swine flu

PUNE: Swine flu claimed two more lives on Thursday, taking the city's death toll to five. In the last two days, three patients have died of the infection.

Mangal Baburao Phalke, a resident of Padali village, Koregaon taluka in Satara district, developed septicemia and succumbed to H1N1 infection around 12.30am at Ruby Hall Clinic on Wednesday. Another patient, 47-year-old Sushil Kumar Bhandare, from Shirol village in Sangli district developed septicemia with multi-organ failure and succumbed to the infection around 12.10pm on the same day. Condition of both the patients was critical and they were put on ventilator support," said a civic health official.

Phalke, a patient of hypertension, developed the symptoms from August 12. She complained of cough and breathlessness, and was admitted to a hospital in Satara. She was later shifted to Ruby Hall Clinic on August 16. Her condition was critical at the time of admission and was put on ventilator the same day. On August 18, her throat swab tested positive for swine flu.

Bhandare started showing the symptoms from July 22. Initially, he had throat pain, dry cough, and mild breathlessness. He was taken to a private hospital in Miraj, which in turn referred him to Ruby Hall Clinic. He was hospitalized on July 27.

40-year-old woman succumbs to swine flu

Nagpur: Making a mild comeback, swine flu this year seems to be taking a toll of health professionals. The disease has already killed a 37-year-old medical officer from Tiroda, Dr Chandoba Suryawanshi, a few days back. Two other resident doctors, one at NKP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences and the other at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), too are under treatment for the viral disease.

Meanwhile, the death toll since January this year in city due to the virus has reached seven with the death of 38-year-old Chandu Dhule from Wardhman Nagar, who tested positive on Tuesday at GMCH, on Wednesday. Dr Suryawanshi died while undergoing treatment at Orange City Hospital and Research Institute (OCHRI). So far, three of the seven deaths have occurred at GMCH. The total number of deaths due to the virus since 2009 is over 131.

Ramesh Bhite, 37, from Jeur tehsil in Ahmednagar district died of swine flu (H1N1 virus) on Friday at Ruby Hall Clinic. This is the eighth death due to swine flu this year, PMC health officials said.

NASHIK: A 45-year-old swine flu patient from Yeola taluka died in a city hospital on Saturday, becoming the second victim from Nashik city this year.

Bajirao Gokul Chavan (45) was suffering from high temperature since September 4 and was admitted to hospitals at Yeola, Kopargaon and then again at Yeola. But as his situation didn't improve, he was brought to a private hospital in Nashik and was kept on ventilation support. Yeola girl tests H1N1 positive

NASHIK: A 19-year-old girl from Yeola has been tested positive for swine flu on Tuesday and is undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital here. The HIV positive girl was admitted in the hospital three days ago as a swine flu suspect. However, the swab sample of another suspected swine flu patient from the city tested negative.

"This is the fourth confirmed swine flu case we had since January," said civil surgeon Eknath Male. "Three patients were treated and discharged earlier. There has been no death due to swine flu in the hospital since January," he added.

NMC's medical superintendent B R Gaikwad said that, since January, 20 swine flu suspects were admitted in the city hospitals and 10 of them were tested positive."

"Out of 10, two have died - Snehalata Chavan (52) from Anandwalli, Gangapur and Rajani Dhoke (28) of Pathardi Phata. At present, we don't have any swine flu patient from the city limits," Gaikwad added. Doctors said necessary drugs and facilities were available at the Civil Hospital. The situation is not alarming but patients should be brought to the hospital when symptoms persist, they added.

11 die of H1N1 in Pune in September

PUNE: Scientists at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) say the H1N1 virus has not undergone any change, but its behaviour pattern remains unpredictable. As a result, people are still dying of the infection with 35 casualties across the state this year.

Eleven people have died in September so far, the highest tally for a month in 2014. A total of 96 people have tested positive in the state, of which 35 have died, which means a mortality rate of 36%. In 2013, the mortality rate (death) had jumped to 23% from 8% in 2012.

The latest victim was a woman from Pimpri Chinchwad who died on September 25. "As many as 35 people have succumbed to swine flu virus in Maharashtra so far this year. Of them, the virus claimed 11 lives in September alone so far.

In August 10 people have succumbed to the swine flu infection in the state," said a senior state health official.The other victims in September hailed from Nashik, Nagpur, Jalgaon and Pune districts.
