Baramati resident dies of swine flu

PUNE: A 48-year-old man from Baramati taluka succumbed to swine flu at a private hospital here, taking the city's H1N1 death toll to 10 this year.

The victim, Bhimrao Doiphode, a resident of Songaon in Baramati, had developed influenza-like symptoms on September 21. He had complained of cough with expectoration and fever with chills and, a few days later, experienced breathlessness.

70-year-old H1N1 patient battles for life in Mumbai hospital

MUMBAI: A 70-year-old man, diagnosed with swine flu, is battling for life at Jaslok Hospital in Peddar Road. The Nanded resident had come to the city for a follow-up after undergoing a kidney transplant recently.

He had to be hospitalized on October 1 after he developed a chest infection. His condition deteriorated soon after. Hospital sources said he has been kept in the isolation facility of the department of infectious diseases. "He is on ventilator and serious. We are closely monitoring his condition," said a doctor. The patient's H1N1-positive report reached the hospital on Monday, though he had been started on the treatment since last Friday.

Elderly and immuno-compromised patients are considered to be at a high-risk of contracting the infection that had created a pandemic in 2009. The patient's family also faced minor hiccups in getting the medication as H1N1 cases are hardly seen in the city and chemists have stopped stocking the anti-viral.

In three years, swine flu claimed 300 lives in state

MUMBAI: Swine flu may be dormant in the city but it has claimed over 300 lives in the state over the last three years. A 70-year-old Nanded resident, who is fighting the infection at a south Mumbai hospital, is an example of how the virus is lurking in the air.

A state public health official said H1N1 infection, also called swine flu, has killed more people than malaria and dengue in Maharashtra since 2009. "Places like Nagpur, Nashik, Kolhapur, Satara and Pune continue to reel under its effect," he said, adding that the situation had improved significantly this year.

As compared to 149 deaths in 2013 and 135 the year before, only 37 swine flu deaths have been reported this year. Mumbai has recorded six deaths in the last three years and has been lucky this year with just ten cases and no casualties.

30-year-old Manchar man dies of swine flu

PUNE: A 30-year-old man from Manchar, around 60km from here, succumbed to swine flu on Wednesday, taking the city's H1N1 death toll to 11 so far this year.

The victim, Santosh Pokharkar, a resident of Pimpalgaon in Manchar (Pune district), complained of fever and developed influenza-like symptoms on September 24.

"He sought treatment then but his condition did not improve and it worsened later. Pokharkar complained of breathlessness on September 28 and was rushed to Sanjeevan Hospital in Manchar. But his health deteriorated further and he was later referred to the KEM hospital in Pune as he needed better treatment," said a health official from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Pokharkar was moved to the KEM hospital on October 2. "He developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) following which he was put on ventilator support on October 9.His throat swab was sent to a private laboratory and he was diagnosed with swine flu. He succumbed to swine flu induced ARDS with pneumonia at 11.05am on October 15," said the official.

Shirdi municipality employee dies of swine flu

42-year-old employee of Shirdi Municipal Corporation died of swine flu today in a Mumbai hospital.

Ashok Rambhau Gaikwad, an employee in corporation's water supply department, was suffering from fever, cold, and cough for last ten days and was being treated at a private hospital in Shirdi but was later moved to a Nashik hospital, chief officer, Shirdi Municipality, Dhairyasheel Jadhav said.

Jaslok death: Swine flu or bacterial?

Mystery shrouds the death of a 70-year-old Nanded resident after he died in Jaslok hospital on Sunday. The deceased was admitted in the isolation ward on October 1 after he was diagonised with H1N1 (swine flu). The deceased (name withheld) was said to have been cured and hence shifted from the isolation ward to the main ICU, where he died on Sunday.

How did the patient allegedly die?
According to hospital sources, the deceased got the infamous acinetobacter infection in the trachea, which he got while he was admitted in the ICU, and died of septic shock. A patient can contract this infection during ICU admission, they added.
Experts say acinetobacter is a multi-drug resistant bacteria, not very common in corporate hospitals. It represents 10-15% of the total hospital-acquired infections and is generally seen in patients admitted in ICU for more than 10 days.

Andheri resident succumbs to H1N1, city?s first casualty this yr

MUMBAI: Even as the city is reeling under the onslaught of dengue, swine flu claimed its first victim this year on Thursday. A 50-year-old Andheri resident succumbed to the respiratory disease in a private suburban hospital.

The deceased had been down with fever, chills, breathlessness and cough since October 25 and sought treatment from a private physician. He got admitted to a private hospital on November 30 after his condition did not improve and was later tested for H1N1.

BMC epidemiologist Dr Mangala Gomare confirmed the death saying the patient tested positive for the virus on Wednesday. "He was started on Tamiflu soon after the report. He also developed pneumonia in the course of his ailment," she said. The patient developed respiratory complications and succumbed to the disease on Thursday. The BMC has begun contact tracing to check if other members of the family were also infected with the virus.

Another swine flu patient dies

NASHIK: The patient who was tested of swine flu on November 23 succumbed to the disease on November 29. According to the medical reports received by the Nashik zilla parishad, 44-year-old Dhondiram Karbhari Mhaskar from Vitthalwadi village in Niphad died around 8.15pm. The patient that was being treated at a private hospital in the city and the health department of the zilla parishad received the report on December 4.

This is the fourth death by swine flu registered with the district administration so far this year.

The patient was admitted to a private hospital in Nashik on November 20 and was tested positive for H1N1. His swab was taken on November 21 and he was diagnosed with swine flu the following day.

"The patient was reportedly on a ventilator and stable when admitted, but his condition deteriorated on November 29. He is reported to have died of atypical pneumonia with acute respiratory distress syndrome with septicemia caused due to H1N1," said district health officer Sushil Wakchaure.

Wakchaure said that the blood pressure of the patient dropped after which he was immediately attended to with emergency medical services. However, his pulse lowered and he eventually lost his life.

[h=1]28-year-old man with swine flu turns critical[/h] Pune: A 28-year-old man is on ventilator support after he was diagnosed with swine flu. This is the season's first swine flu positive case where the patient's condition has become critical soon after the diagnosis.

The patient, a resident of Indapur taluka, developed influenza like symptoms on December 8. "He had fever, cough and mild breathlessness that progressively increased. He was initially admitted to a private hospital in Baramati on December 9. His condition did not improve and was shifted to KEM Hospital in Pune for tertiary care on December 11," said a health official of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
