According to WHO, vaccines are the most effective ways of safeguarding oneself from contracting the illness during influenza epidemics and pandemics. Influenza vaccination will bring down the morbidity and mortality rate in people with illness like diabetes and hypertension," said Salunkhe.

The countdown for monsoon is yet to begin but the state health minister is all set to fight swine flu by spreading the message of vaccination. The H1N1 virus had killed 46 people in Mumbai early this year and health experts are expecting the infection to return during the rainy season.

The idea to have vaccination awareness programmes for H1N1 virus was chalked out by the special communicable disease committee formed by the state health department. The committee is headed by Dr Subhash Salunkhe. He has been appointed as the chairman of the Maharashtra Communicable Diseases Prevention and Control Technical Committee and its major role will be to design recommendations for preventive measures and surveillance of communicable disease.

Swine flu death in peak summer alarms doctors
Confirmation that Wednesday's death of a 49-year-old woman who was admitted to KEM Hospital two days ago was due to swine flu has alarmed civic health officials.

More worryingly, two doctors from JJ Hospital who were treating a swine flu patient have also tested positive, while KEM is treating another patient.While health officials have now started collating city-wide data, Sources at the Halfkine Institute, which tests for the virus, said they were getting at least four cases every day from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, of which at least two or three are testing positive every day.

[h=1]Swine flu claims one more life despite rising mercury[/h]
AURANGABAD: Despite the high temperature in the city for the past few days, the swine flu raised its head again, claiming the life of a 41-year old woman on Wednesday night, taking the toll in Aurangabad division, comprising Aurangabad, Hingoli, Parbhani and Jalna districts, to 34 this year.

Civil surgeon GM Gaikwad said, "Shamabee Latif Sayed, a resident of Sikander colony succumbed to the H1N1 virus on Wednesday night. She was admitted to the GMCH on Monday with acute renal failure and diabetes. She also suffered from adult respiratory distress syndrome and was intubated. The patient had also suffered from pulmonary tuberculosis in the past."

"The patient belonged to high-risk category, which may be the reason for her not recovering. Her swab samples tested positive for swine flu," he added.

Despite the mercury rising in the past one month, the GMCH has been reporting on average two suspected swine flu cases every day, Gaikwad said.

As per the data from the public health department, Aurangabad division has been severely hit by H1N1 this year. "With the fresh cases, the number of swine flu cases in the Aurangabad district has increased to 60, while 25 of them succumbed to the disease."

According to hospital sources, the woman was transferred from a local hospital in Dombivli, where she was admitted on May 26. Dr Mini Khetrapal, the epidemiology cell in-charge in BMC, said that the patient had a respiratory failure and no secondary ailments like diabetes or hypertension.

A Dombivli resident, aged 32 years, succumbed to swine flu on Saturday morning at Kasturba Hospital. This is the second swine flu death in Mumbai in less than a week's time.

Though temperatures have soared to 35?C, H1N1 has not only survived, but also claimed three lives in the metropolitan region over the fortnight. Doctors and virologists are stumped at the resurgence of the virus in summer, but say timely diagnosis can save lives.

Two of the three deceased, all below 50, did not have underlying ailments. But at least in two cases, time was lost in starting them on Oseltamivir, the most effective H1N1 drug. After a brief lull towards the end of April, doctors have again started treating three to four cases per week.

Despite heat, swine flu toll goes up by four

Nagpur: The death toll due to H1N1 in the region from January 1 this year touched 125 on Monday. This includes 58 deaths in city, six in Nagpur rural area, six in small towns and three in Wardha district.

The last four swine flu deaths were, however, reported after a gap of 25 days. Till May 5, the region had recorded 121 deaths.

Though a 55-year-old woman from Seoni in Madhya Pradesh died on May 27 at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), the death was reported to the DDHS office on Monday. Her death has brought the total death toll in city and region to 125. Before that, two other patients, one from Gondia and one from Madhya Pradesh also died at GMCH.

Woman from Nagar dies of swine flu, toll touches 41

NASHIK: A 52-year-old swine flu patient from Ahmednagar died in the civil hospital in the city on Monday, taking the toll to the contagion in Nashik district since January to 41.

Officials in the health department of the zilla parishad on Tuesday said Jamila Rajjak Syed was admitted to the civil hospital on Monday around 11pm but he died within 30 minutes. The department had in May registered another death because of swine flu. The deceased, Rajaram Damu Damre (45), was from Sinnar. The number of positive cases registered so far in the district is 224.

Maharashtra to provide swine flu vaccine to vulnerables

The Maharashtra health department has decided to vaccinate ?vulnerable groups? against swine flu, or H1N1 infection, this year. Concerned about the likely resurgence of the H1N1 virus in the community once the monsoon sets in, a high-level committee has recommended that diabetics, people with hypertension, children, pregnant women, and people with low immunity and respiratory ailments should be vaccinated.

The health department is yet to decide whether they can provide vaccination free of cost. ?The union ministry has agreed to fund the vaccination of doctors and other healthcare providers who are likely to contract the infection from patients. Now we have asked the state health ministry for funding the vaccination for the vulnerable population that the expert team has identified,? said Dr Satish Pawar, director of health services, Maharashtra.

[h=1]45-year-old woman dies of swine flu[/h] Even as the state?s expert committee on communicable diseases has been crying hoarse to introduce vaccines against swine flu and build immunity among citizens ahead of the monsoon season, a 45-year-old woman died due to H1N1 virus at Sassoon General Hospital.
While authorities both at Sassoon hospital and a private hospital at Hadapsar where the woman was earlier treated refused to be quoted, they confirmed that the Pune resident, who was both diabetic and obese, had been infected with H1N1 virus.

PUNE: The H1N1 virus has reared its head once again with the onset of monsoon. On Thursday, six people tested positive in the state while two have died (one each in Pune and Kolhapur).

The condition of three patients is critical and they have been put on ventilator support. The virus has claimed three lives and infected 31 since the beginning of this month.

Of the six cases, three are from Mumbai, two from Kolhapur and one from Pune city. With this, the number of people infected with H1N1 in the state has reached 5,293 since January this year, said a state health official.

The state has also reported two deaths in Pune and Kolhapur. "A 43-year-old woman from Hadapsar died at the Noble hospital on June 12. She was a diabetic and had hypertension. Her throat swab report confirmed swine flu. A man from Phulewadi village in Kolhapur district died at a hospital in Kolhapur on June 16. He had diabetes, hypertension and ischemic heart disease," the official said.

About 538 people have succumbed to the flu in the state so far this year.

[h=1]Goregaon woman is Mumbai?s 43rd H1N1 victim in 2015[/h] A 32-year-old woman from Goregaon became the latest victim of the swine flu infection, which has, so far, killed 43 people from Mumbai this year. The woman is among the increasing number of people without any medical history who have succumbed to the illness.
This year, so far, 541 people have died of swine flu in the state. Experts said in the first quarter of the year, most deaths were among the vulnerable population, which includes pregnant women, children and elderly. Half of the deaths were of citizens who were suffering from diabetes, hypertension or both. In this case, the woman was in the hospital for about three weeks and succumbed to the H1N1 infection on Friday, said civic officials.
Doctors said she had developed the acute respiratory distress syndrome as a result of the infection and was on ventilator support at the Kasturba Hospital, Chinchpokli. Civic officials said the woman showed symptoms of swine flu on June 10 and was admitted to a local hospital in Goregaon the next day. ?She came to our hospital with breathlessness and her X-ray reports suggested acute respiratory distress syndrome. We transferred her to Sion Hospital,? said Dr Madhukar Garodiya, physician, Radha Krishna Hospital, where the woman was first admitted.

Fight against swine flu: Health minister, secretary volunteer for vaccine

As part of their campaign to encourage more people to take vaccination against swine flu, to be rolled out in the first week of July, State?s Health Minister Dr Deepak Sawant, principal health secretary Sujata Saunik and other health officials will take the injectable vaccine in Pune, according to Saunik, who was recently in Pune to conduct a review of health programmes.
The injectable vaccine will be given free of cost to pregnant women in the second and third trimester at government hospitals, Saunik told The Indian Express.

Saunik said that a decision, however, had to be taken to make it free for other high-risk groups too.
This year, Maharashtra has registered 541 deaths due to swine flu so far. The highest number of deaths was in Nagpur (68) followed by Pune (48), Nashik (41), Mumbai (37), Pune rural (35) and Pimpri Chinchwad (23).

[h=1]Another detected with H1N1, count stands at 16[/h] Yet another resident of the city has been detected with H1N1 flu on Saturday. The 44-year old Ghatkopar resident is the sixteenth victim of the disease this month.
The patient was down with fever and flu initially and went for a regular check-up. On further examination, under which the throat swab was taken, the infection was confirmed.
?There has been a bit of a delay in beginning the treatment and starting the steroids, because of which his condition has worsened. He is critical currently and has been shifted to Bombay Hospital,? said Dr Om Shrivastava, director of the department of infectious diseases, Jaslok Hospital.

Nashik registers yet another swine flu death

NASHIK: This was perhaps the last thing the health officials in Nashik had expected in the run-up to Kumbh Mela ? the news of a swine flu death.

The department has registered the casualty that occurred in April at a private hospital in the city but reported as late as this Tuesday. Besides, it has identified a swine flu positive case from Sangamner taluka in neighbouring Ahmednagar district.

An official in the department said Suman Nivrutti Andhale (45), who was detected swine flu positive, was from the Pratapur area in Sangamner. Suman was on June 27 admitted to a private hospital in the city and her throat swab reports confirmed that she was suffering from the disease. Doctors attending to her said Suman's condition was stable.

On the other hand, Yogita Yogendrasingh Girate (22), a resident of the Sindhkheda area in Dhule district, who was admitted to a private hospital in the city on April 3, died on April 12. She had tested positive on April 4.

[h=1]At 44, dist surpasses last yr?s swine flu death toll[/h] NASHIK: It's only been six months into the year but Nashik district has already surpassed last year's figures of the highest number of deaths from swine flu. The maximum number of deaths were reported in Nashik city followed by the rural parts of the district and then the adjoining districts.

Last year, the registered only four deaths from H1N1, which has increased to 44 this year so far, a rise by nearly 11times.With the advent of the Kumbh Mela when lakhs of pilgrims will throng the city for the holy dip, the threat of spreading of disease looms large.

District health officer Sushil Wakchaure said, "There could be many reasons for the rise in the number of deaths from swine flu. But the sporadic rains all through the year and drop in the temperature were among the major reasons for the rise in the cases and deaths from H1N1."

Wakchaure further said that the contagious diseases generally arrived in cycles and viral diseases struck every four to five years even as the residents' immunity against the virus reduced over time.

In 2010, the district recorded 39 deaths from swine flu. This time around, 44 people have already succumbed to the disease in a matter of six months, said the officials.
