Mumbai: Two women from the western suburbs died of H1N1 and leptospirosis over the past 48 hours, keeping fears of monsoon-related diseases in the city alive. Among the deceased was a pregnant woman from Borivli who succumbed to complications after a delay of eight days in starting the antiviral treatment for H1N1.

Two persons succumbed to swine flu within two days as the toll rose to 32, since January this year. A 67-year-old man, a Bhandup resident and a 45-year-old man, resident of Ratnagiri passed away at Fortis Hospital in Mulund and KEM Hospital in Parel, respectively on August 12 and 13.

The 67-year-old was a patient of diabetes, high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease and bronchial asthma. He died within four days of admission to Fortis Hospital. The 45-year-old died within six days of admission to KEM Hospital. He had no history of any other disease.

Mumbai: A 64-year-old Wadala resident has become the third senior citizen to die of H1N1 in a week, taking Mumbai's swine flu death toll to 37 this year. Doctors are scouting for an explanation as to why the virus continues to be a ruthless killer despite circulating for six years now.

As per a BMC report, the Wadala man had diabetes, hypertension and bronchitis. He was first admitted to Dadar's Dhanvantari Hospital and later shifted to Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central, with his lungs collapsing. He died of multi-organ failure and pneumonia on August 15. Four to five H1N1 deaths are being reported daily from across the state of late.

A preliminary analysis of over 1,100 deaths between 2009 and 2011 in Maharashtra has shown that delay of treatment is one of the biggest contributing factors. Accounts by the families of two children from Girgaum and Kalina who died of the infection on August 2 and 12 bear this out. The 30-month-old boy from Girgaum and the five-year-old girl from Kalina were not suspected of harbouring the viral infection till it was very late to treat them. Ironically, both were taken to qualified physicians and well-equipped hospitals on time.

But he died of acute cardiorespiratory failure within three days.

The second victim was a 58-year-old Thane man who had diabetes and hypertension as underlying health conditions. He was treated in two hospitals before succumbing of acute respiratory distress syndrome (lung collapse). While 90 H1N1 cases were reported in first week of August, it rose to 138 in the second week. Intensivist Dr Khushrav Bhajan, who consults with Hinduja Hospital, said more cases can be resolved if patients seek treatment on time.
