NAGPUR: Even as monsoon is at its tail end, swine flu infection seems to be raising its head again in the city. Tuesday saw the death of three more patients from the disease, while two others tested H1N1 positive, taking the number of positive cases between Tuesday and Wednesday to five.

"One of the two deaths that was reported to us on Tuesday was of a middle-aged man from Madhya Pradesh who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city," said an official from the Deputy Directorate of Health Services.

The second death was of a 48-year-old resident of Railway Quarters in city who was admitted in the swine flu ward of GMCH. A 60-year-old woman from Kharbi also passed away at a private hospital.

29-year-old woman dies of dengue, swine flu co-infection in Pune
The woman had symptoms like fever, cough , loose motions and nausea since September 15. She also suffered from rheumatic arthritis and was undergoing treatment.

AURANGABAD: Over 250 inmates at the Harsul-based Aurangabad Central Prison have been confined to separate barracks at the prison after they started showing symptoms of swine flu.

Over the last three days, the number of sick has been rising rapidly with 30 to 40 prisoners being shifted to the barracks daily, sources said. The authorities initially denied reports of prisoners being infected with swine flu-like symptoms but on Monday evening the authorities confirmed they were keeping those with symptoms in isolation on 'medical grounds'.

The inmates are complaining of bodyache, high fever, runny nose and sore throat. A 40-year-old man, whose brother is in the prison said, "Today I came to meet my brother and learnt that the inmates are quite panicky as over 250 are suspected of having swine flu and have been kept in isolation. Though they have symptoms, the prison authorities are not conducting blood tests or sputum tests to clear the air on the issue."

NAGPUR: The death toll in city due to swine flu in September has reached nine, taking the total number of deaths in the region due to the disease since January to 136.

Of these, a 60-year-old woman and a 40-year-old man died on September 21 and 22, respectively.

Two other deaths took place on September 25 and included a 68-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man. The man belonged to Amravati. A 40-year-old woman from Tiroda in Gondia district died on September 28.

Swine flu claims one; five confirmed cases in GMCH

Nagpur: Sunday saw the death of one swine flu patient and two others suspected of the disease at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The jump in number of patients suspected of having H1N1 infection being admitted to the hospital has sprung the authorities into action. An independent 25-bedded ward has been set up for swine flu patients.

One of the confirmed patients, 32-year-old Mohammed Shabbir Muzzafar working as a teacher at Chandrapur and belonging to Amravati succumbed to the disease two days after being admitted. The two other deceased were 40-year-old Sunita Neware from Gondia district and 67-year-old Baburao Bomaji Wankhede from Ramteke. All the patients who died on Sunday are known to have compromised lung functions.

Swine flu makes a comeback with seven deaths in Oct

Nagpur: H1N1 seems to be making a serious comeback. With two more deaths last Thursday (one in Chandrapur city and one in Seoni district of MP), that were reported late to the health office, the swine flu toll since January 1 this year has reached 145. This figure includes patients from not just city or region but also neighbouring states.

Currently, the nine H1N1 deaths in September alone in various city hospitals are a cause of concern. This month till Saturday (October 10), nine patients have reportedly succumbed to H1N1. "Two of them died last month but were reported to the deputy director health services (DDHS) office between October 2 and 4. Seven deaths in a span of ten days is still a big number," said a senior official in the DDHS office.

Three die of swine flu in state, 17 critical in Pune

PUNE: Swine flu claimed three lives - one each in Pune, Latur and Kolhapur - on Saturday, while the condition of 19 other patients in the state is currently critical and they have been put on ventilator support. Of the 19 patients, 17 are being treated at hospitals in Pune.

"Seven more people tested positive for the infection on Saturday. This has taken the number of swine flu cases in Maharashtra to 8,241 so far this year. Including Saturday's three casualties, 810 people have died from the H1N1 virus in the state so far this year," said a state health official.

One off the three casualties was a 60-year-old man from Bangewadi village in Latur district. He died at the Government Medical College Hospital in Latur. A 47-year old man from Satara district succumbed to the contagion at Poona Hospital in Pune, while a 42-year-old woman from Sangli district died of swine flu at a private hospital in Kolhapur.

The extended rainy season has provided atmosphere that is conducive for the virus to grow.

NASHIK: Swine flu has, so far, claimed 78 lives in the district this year. As many as 22 deaths among them were reported from the Nashik civil hospital, while 56 were at private hospitals. The 78 deaths until September 12 this year are twice the number of the highest deaths in a year (39), recorded in 2010.

Senior medical officers said the threat of the viral disease would continue, given the frequent variation in temperatures; so the citizens should must take every precaution to keep themselves from getting the virus; as well as make all attempts to increase their immunity.

PUNE: A 57-year-old man of Khed taluka in Satara succumbed to swine flu while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here, taking the number of swine flu-related fatalities to 136 this year.

The man developed influenza-like illness on September 10. He did not seek medical care for the first five days. However the patient's condition did not improve and He was shifted to the Pune-based Noble hospital on September 19. In view of his critical condition, he was put on ventilator support. A diabetic and high blood pressure patient, the man's condition deteriorated further. He suffered a cardiac arrest and was declared dead at 8.11 pm on October 15.

Of 136 people, who have succumbed to the contagion in the city till date, 47 were local residents. Another person tested positive for the contagion in the city on Friday, taking the number of confirmed cases to 1,088 this year. The condition of 10 swine flu patients is critical and they are on ventilator support.

Pune: Swine flu claimed five lives in Mumbai, Pune, Satara, Ahmednagar and Nashik on Saturday, taking the number of casualties to 834 in the state this year.

At present, 12 patients are critical in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.

A total of 15 people tested positive in the state on Saturday. This has taken the number of positive cases to 8,345 this year.

This took October's toll of the disease to 21 and the official count of swine flu related deaths in the circle since January 1 in the Nagpur circle reached 156.
Of the four deaths notified to the deputy director of health services (DDHS) on Wednesday, only the kid who had passed away on Sunday belonged to the city. Others included a 40-year-old woman from Gondia whose death occurred on Saturday, a 31-year-old woman and another 44-year-old woman from Madhya Pradesh.

Hadapsar man succumbs to swine flu

PUNE: A 48-year-old resident of Hadapsar died of swine flu in a private hospital on Tuesday, taking swine flu deaths to 137 so far, this year.

The man developed influenza-like symptoms on October 14. Initially, he had sought treatment from doctors in the neighbourhood. He was referred to Noble Hospital on October 18 after his condition failed to improve. His condition deteriorated and he had to be shifted to Inamdar Hospital the same day due to non-availability of ventilator at Noble Hospital. The patient's throat swab had tested positive for swine flu by then.
