Two more succumb to swine flu, eight critical

Pune: A 61-year-old woman from New Sangvi was among the two persons who succumbed to swine flu-induced complications in the city last week, taking the number of H1N1 deaths to 51 so far this year.
At least eight more patients diagnosed with the contagion are in critical condition and have been put on ventilator support at different hospitals in the city.

Pune Municipal Corporation health officials on Monday said the two patients had other underlying medical conditions along with swine flu.
"The New Sangvi woman, who died on May 13, was a hypertension patient and was suffering from epilepsy for the last three years. While the other patient, a 62-year-old man from a village in Belgaum, had liver disease due to hepatitis C virus infection. He also had acute respiratory distress syndrome and passed away on May 12," a health official said.

Kurla woman succumbs to H1N1

Mumbai: Swine flu has claimed its second victim in the city; a 72-year-old woman staying in Kurla. This takes the H1N1 death toll across the state to 196, said health department officials.
The woman died at privately-run Kohinoor Hospital, Kurla, on Friday although her report was awaited for confirmation of H1N1 infection. She was suffering from high blood pressure and Ischemia (a condition that affects blood supply to the heart). As her condition worsened, she was rushed to the hospital at 3am. However, doctors at the hospital pronounced her dead within six hours of treatment.
Dr Padmaja Keskar, executive health officer, BMC, said, “We have started our screening procedure and spreading awareness in our outpatient department (OPD). Over 3,776 people belonging to 750 families in Kurla, especially in the deceased’s locality, have been screened by our health officials.”

Swine flu: 13 deaths since March, 7 in last 30 days

Nagpur: Right in the middle of peak summer, when swine flu was expected to vanish from the city, it has grown manifold. Of all the swine flu affected patients recorded from January 1, 2017, till date, 50% of the positive cases and deaths have been recorded in the last 30 days.
A 5-month-old girl, the youngest swine flu patient, died recently at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH). The girl was admitted to IGMCH on April 30, and was detected positive the same day. She passed away on May 7, along with two other patients from the city, taking the death toll to 13 since March 1.

Swine flu or H1N1 virus killed two more people this week taking the death toll to six in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Pointing out the shortened incubation period and faster disease progression seen in recent cases, medical experts have advised doctors from primary and secondary hospitals to diagnose the infection at an early stage as most of the cases are reaching tertiary care facilities at critical stages.

The two women who succumbed to the virus hailed from Thane and were referred to Kasturba Hospital. They died within two to three days of receiving treatment. In both the cases, the patients had consulted several doctors which caused delay in treatment.

Civic officials said a 56-year-old woman who died at Kasturba Hospital was admitted on May 19 and died on May 21. The patient had been experiencing classic symptoms of the infection since May 9, underwent a swab test only on May 18 and was diagnosed with H1N1 on May 19. ?The patient had been suffering from hypertension for 15 years and was diabetic too. She also had a history of cough, breathlessness, fever and sore throat for which she underwent treatment at Prime Criticare Hospital of Thane for three days,? said a civic official.

Pune: The city toll for swine flu has now reached 54 after a 34-year-old male from Osmanabad was reported dead on Monday. He was tested positive for swine flu on May 15. The Health Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) noted that his swab was sent for testing on May 15 and the patient had no major illness.

Another 50-year-old woman from Ahmednagar district was reported dead on May 20. Her swab was sent for testing to National Institute of Virology (NIV) on May 18 and was tested positive on May 19 with no major illness.

For the first time in the summer, swine flu has been spreading in various parts of the state, and in Vidarbha, 52 cases have been reported in the last five months. Pune: Swine flu has returned with a vengeance, claiming 226 lives in just five months this year against 26 last year.
As many as 82 people tested positive for swine flu in Maharashtra last year. In contrast, the disease has affected 1,145 in five months (January to May) in 2017.
Recording highest 84 casualties this year, Pune district continues to be the epicentre for the virus transmission in the state. Of the 84 causalities, Pune city and Pimpri Chichwad have recorded 54 and 20 deaths, respectively. State-run Sassoon General hospital, the largest state-run hospital in western Maharashtra, has recorded eight deaths.

A 32-year-old pregnant woman became the seventh swine flu victim in the city. A total of 230 swine flu- related deaths have been recorded in Maharashtra this year, while 1,200 patients are being treated for the disease.

The Dharavi resident, the second pregnant woman to die of swine flu this year, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital. As her health parameters kept deteriorating, the doctors shifted her to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, Sion, on May 27. She died within two-three hours of treatment, doctors said.

Last year, the virus had claimed 26 lives in the city , while 82 died in other parts of Maharashtra. This year, four Mumbaiites have died, while three were patients from outside the city, who had come to Mumbai for treatment. Five of the seven people who succumbed to the virus were women. Doctors, however, said it is a coincidence and there is no gender bias when it comes to disease progression or mortality rate.

Three senior citizens from Andheri and Jogeshwari, two of them diabetics and one a patient of hypertension, succumbed to influenza H1N1 virus within the last one week, taking the city's death toll to seven for the year. Both these suburban areas have emerged as the hotbed of swine flu cases this season, the civic body said in its first monsoon bulletin on Thursday.

State epidemiologist Dr Pradeep Awate said the percentage of deaths among senior citizens has reduced as compared to previous years. "Over 67% deaths have been in the 21-50 bracket. Six out of the 10 deceased had some or the other health problems. We had about 15-20 deaths in people above 60," said Awate. He said that deaths among pregnant women too have been brought under control. "It's less than 10 this year," he added.
