GENEVA - U.N. aid agencies are increasing operations in flood-stricken Malawi in a desperate attempt to stave off a potentially large-scale cholera epidemic. The United Nations Children's Fund says Malawi is on high alert following a cholera outbreak in southern border areas, near Mozambique. U.N. aid workers are alarmed at the prospect of a large, nationwide outbreak of cholera in Malawi. This is because the disease is located in the southern border areas where flood victims are living in overcrowded camps, an environment in which cholera flourishes...

Malawi: Cholera Cases in Malawi Rising

Cases of cholera outbreak in Malawi have risen to 60 from 39 Malawi24 has learnt.

According to a recent toll had revealed that the scare was hitting Malawi's borders more especially Mozambique borders.

As of now Malawi24 can reveal that the Ministry of Health says the cases in Malawi have rapidly increased to 60 from 39 as it was initially projected.

The Ministry's Spokesperson Henry Chimbali told a local radio that as of Monday, March 1st, the cases had reached 60 with the highest in Nsanje district.

Nsanje has up to 50 cases of cholera, with 6 in Chikwawa, 1 in Lilongwe and the rest from other up land districts...

Malawi: Cholera Cases in Nsanje Hit 90

Efforts to contain the cholera outbreak in Nsanje seem to be hitting a snag, with the district health office confirming an increase in the number of cases registered and that most cases have roots to neighbouring Mozambique.

District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Alexander Chijuwa confirmed on Friday that the number of cholera cases had increased to 90 from 76 earlier in the week.

Dr. Chijuwa said the source of the outbreak was Mozambique's Jambawe mine where most people in the southern part of the district flock to in search for work...

Malawi: Cholera Claims 3 Lives, 281 Now Affected in Chikwawa

Chikwawa ? The Cholera outbreak continues to wreck havoc in Chikwawa district with reports from the district's health office indicating that the number of cases has increased to 281 from 239 the previous week. Three lives have so far been lost.

Initially, the outbreak affected people from areas of Ngabu, Lundu, Ngowe, Kasisi and Chapananga. But fresh reports indicate it has also hit areas of Chiefs Katunga and Makhuwira...
