Plain flu cause of college quarantine

KUANTAN: It has been confirmed that the 200 Mara Junior Science College (MRSM) students under quarantine since Tuesday had caught regular flu.

State Health Department director Datuk Dr Rosnah Ismail said the school would be declared flu-free if no new cases were reported today.

She said only two students still had flu symptoms yesterday. "We did not allow them to leave the hostel as we didn't want the flu to spread."

Dr Rosnah added that quarantine was a standard procedure in containing a flu outbreak, so there was nothing to worry about.

The students were checked twice a day by doctors during the incubation period for flu.

The rest of the students were allowed to continue with their regular weekend activities, and parents were visiting their children as usual. The college has 700 students.

Malaysians quarantined after flight with A (H1N1) passenger

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia: The Selangor Health Depart-ment has quarantined two Malaysians who were on the same flight as a passenger that tested positive for influenza A (H1N1) in Taiwan.

The two had been on board flight BR007 from San Francisco to Taipei and arrived in Kuala Lumpur on flight MH069 last Sunday.

One of the passengers on flight BR007 was later tested positive for A (H1N1) virus by the Taiwanese medical authorities.

Health Ministry director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said in a press release yesterday that the two Malaysians were healthy and would be in isolation until Sunday.

Dr Ismail also said that six people isolated at several hospitals were still waiting for the results of laboratory tests.

He said that 10 of 17 people who had been admitted to six hospitals had been cleared of the virus.

Dr Ismail added that the six patients were admitted to the Sungai Buloh Hospital, four to Kuala Lumpur Hospital, three to Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital in Seremban, two to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu and one each at the Raja Permaisuri Bainun in Ipoh and the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru.

He said the number of confirmed cases in the country remained at two with no local transmission.

Some 9,972 individuals returning from countries affected with A(H1N1) virus - via air, sea and land entry points ? were also screened between Monday and 8am yesterday.

Out of those screened three were referred to hospitals for further examination.

Dr Ismail also said that three students of Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) in Kuantan had been identified as suffering from fever, cough and sore throat and placed at the isolation room in campus for observation.

As at 8am yesterday, 115 students with the same symptoms were still in isolation while 19 others had been released.

Three students from Sekolah Modak Khas in Bukit Jenun, Pendang, have also been hospitalised with seasonal influenza.

Three others were discharged yesterday.

On the leptospirosis outbreak, Dr Ismail said that the number of patients admitted remained at seven.

Juru immigration detention centre declared free of leptospirosis

KUALA LUMPUR, Wed:

The Juru Immigration detention depot in Bukit Mertajam has been declared free of leptospirosis outbreak.
Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said all the six patients admitted at Bukit Mertajam hospital have been discharged.

He said only more person was still warded at Seberang Jaya hospital and his condition was stable.

As to the outbreak of Influenza A/H3 (seasonal flu) at Maktab Rendah Sains Mara in Kuantan, Dr Ismail said, of the 115 kept in observation room, 38 were given a clean bill of health and discharged while the remaining 77 were still being monitored.

?No new cases have been reported thus far. However, the medical team is still closely monitoring the situation at the boarding school and will remain there until today (thursday),? he added.
He said laboratory tests have confirmed that the students were infected with the Influenza A/H3 virus.

It seems to definitely be a confirmed case of H3 - seasonal.

....As for the influenza A/H3, Dr Mohd Ismail said 77 students from Maktab Rendah Sains MARA in Kuantan were placed under observation.

From 115 cases, 38 had been released from observation while no new cases were reported, he said.

"The medical team will continue monitoring the situation till Thursday," he said.

Lab tests have confirmed that the situation was caused by the influenza A/H3 virus A which is a seasonal disease, he said.

On the Influenza A/H3 cases at the Mara Junior Science College in Kuantan, Pahang, Dr Mohd Ismail said that of the 77 cases yesterday, 52 had been removed from observation while 25 were still under observation.

He said no new cases were detected and the monitoring and observation were expected to end today.

"Laboratory tests confirmed that the cause of the incident was the spread of the seasonal Influenza A virus," he said.
