Overweight young woman is H1N1 victim 71


PUTRAJAYA: A 24-year-old woman is the latest casualty of the Influenza A (H1N1) pandemic, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 71.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the woman had died on Aug 19 but the cause of death was confirmed by the mortality review committee only on Wednesday
The latest victim was overweight and had been admitted to private hospital in Kuantan on Aug 10 after complaining of headache, fever and cough, he said.

49-year-old latest H1N1 victim, toll rises to 72

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 ?The number of deaths in relation to the H1N1 pandemic has now risen 72 following the death yesterday of a 49-year-old man in Melaka, the first recorded since the wave of fatalities appeared to halt last Wednesday.

According to a statement by the director-general of Health Tan Sri Ismail Merican, the latest victim was being treated in Melaka Hospital after being admitted earlier for fever, flu, and nausea. The victim underwent a treatment of antibiotics and antiviral medicines but continued to deteriorate in condition.

Acute breathing difficulties prompted the hospital to move the victim into the intensive care unit, but he quickly succumbed to what ministry officials say was ?severe pneumonia with septicaemic shock and H1N1.?

As of this morning, the ministry?s website showed 202 new cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILI), which in accordance with an earlier ministry directive are being treated as H1N1. 1,515 patients remain under observation nationwide for similar symptoms.

PUTRAJAYA: Health authorities have confirmed another death due to Influenza A (H1N1), this time involving a victim who was not in the high risk category, with the death toll now at 73.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said the 25-year-old woman from Betong, Sarawak was admitted to the district hospital on Aug 30 for fever, cough and sore throat and had previously sought treatment for a similar illness from the same hospital.

?On Aug 31, she was referred to the Sibu Hospital for further treatment where anti-viral treatment was given. She however died the next day (Sept 1) due to severe pneumonia with H1N1 infection,? he said on Thursday.

He added that laboratory test results confirmed that the victim had been infected with A(H1N1).

Dr Ismail said that in the past 24 hours, 266 new patients with influenza-like illness had been admitted to hospitals while 293 patients were discharged.

There are currenly 1,211 patients being treated in hospitals nationwide, including 11 private hospitals, and only 230 are confirmed A(H1N1) patients.

Dr Ismail said there were 41 cases in intensive care units, including five new admissions.

He said the ministry observed there were still many who had cough, sore throat and even fever who continue to frequent public places when they should remain indoors to prevent others from getting ill.

?They should only go out if necessary and not to go shopping or patronising entertainment outlets and attending gatherings. Even when it is crucial for them to leave the house, they must put on the face masks.

?It seems that many are still not aware how the virus spreads, which is through fluids when talking, coughing or sneezing. The public should also keep their distance from people who are ill apart,? he said,

Dr Ismail said public co-operation was needed to prevent the disease from spreading further.

838 New Patients With ILI, H1N1 Death Toll Remains At 77 People



KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28(Bernama) -- No deaths were reported last week due to Influenza A (H1N1) leaving the death toll due to the disease so far to remain at 77 people.
However, a total of 838 new patients were hospitalised for influenza-like illness (ILI) while 884 cases were discharged (for ILI) last week.

As of Oct 24, a total of 465 ILI cases were still getting treatment at 66 hospitals nationwide,at four private hospitals.

"Of the ILI cases being treated, only 15 cases or three per cent were confirmed to be influenza A (H1N1) cases," said Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican in a statement here Wednesday.

He said in the same period, six patients were admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) while four other patients were discharged from ICUs.

Commenting on the global situation, Dr Mohd Ismail said cases of Influenza A (H1N1) were on the rise in North America, Western Europe and East Asia while in the Southern Hemisphere, cases were declining.

Within the last week (15 to 21 November 2009) a total of 599 new patients with symptoms of Influenza-Like Illness (Inclusion) has been admitted to hospital for treatment and in the same period 592 cases were discaj. On 21 November 2009 (the last day of epid week 46/2009), Inclusion in the number of cases still being treated in the whole country is of 391 cases in 62 hospitals including 4 two private hospitals. Inclusion of total cases that are treated iu, only 13 patients or 3% is a case of Influenza A (H1N1) is confirmed through laboratory tests.

In the same period, a total of 6 patients were admitted to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment, and 4 patients had discaj of Intensive Care Unit. On 21 November 2009, 6 cases are still treated in the Intensive Care Unit and six cases had risk factors of children under 5 years (3 cases) and chronic disease (3 cases).

No deaths due to influenza A (H1N1) registered in India during the last week and mortality remains 77 people.
