kUANTAN: A six-year-old boy died of Influenza A(H1N1) in Pahang wednesday, the first death from the disease in the state which raised the national death toll to 13.

Mohd Hyafiq (rpt) Hyafiq Aiman Mohd Saiful Afendi died at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan (HTAA) Hospital here at 12.40pm after suffering from pneumonia.

The boy's mother, identified only as Tia, said her son was admitted to the hospital on Aug 1 after he developed fever and complained of stomachache.

She said her only child, a pupil of the Unity Kindergarten in Taman Bukit Setongkol, was buried at the Bukit Ubi cemetery this evening.

She also claimed that she was not allowed to see her son while he was under quarantine at the hospital and was informed this afternoon that he had died.

Pahang Local Government, Environment and Health Committee chairman Datuk Hoh Khai Mun, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed the death but declined to elaborate. (Bernama)

Kuala lumpur: The deaths of five people within 72 hours have brought the number of the influenza A (H1N1)-related fatalities to 13.

The latest case involved Mohd Hyafiq Afendi, six, from Pahang. He died at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital at 12.40pm after suffering from pneumonia.

The boy was admitted to the hospital on Aug 1 after developing fever and complaining of stomach ache.

Of the other four victims, three were in Malacca and one in Batu Pahat. The Malacca girl was the youngest, aged three.

All five victims were suffering from chronic respiratory problems when they contracted the virus.

?In Malacca, the girl and a 20-year-old man suffered from chronic lung diseases, while a 12- year-old boy had serious kidney failure before he was infected by the H1N1 virus,? Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said in a press conference in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, yesterday.

In Johor Baru, a six-year-old boy became the 12th H1N1-related victim.

The boy was suffering from pneumonia and he died in the Batu Pahat Hospital here yesterday, said state Health department director Dr Mohd Khairi Yaakub.

Liow was in Brunei with six other Cabinet ministers accompanying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak for the annual consultative meeting with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

He said there were 16 new cases yesterday, bringing the total number of cases to 1,426.

Commenting on the worsening haze condition, Liow said it complicated ?an already very difficult situation?.

?Polluted air can result in an increase of respiratory ailments - a situation which will cause the victims to be more vulnerable in the event of a fatal H1N1 virus attack.

?The H1N1 virus attacks the lung-cells directly. It then causes serious pneumonia. Those with respiratory ailments have weaker immune systems and the attack can be more serious,? he said.

Malaysia and Brunei, added Liow, have agreed to increase joint efforts to tackle the spread of the flu.

He said Brunei was very stringent in the precautionary measures adopted, especially the health screenings and surveillance along its border checkpoints.

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- Another death related to Influenza A (H1N1), that of a 57-year old male pensioner at the Putrajaya Hospital Wednesday, has raised the number of deaths due to the pandemic to 14 since this morning.

Director-General of Health Tan Sri Dr Mohd Ismail Merican said the victim who had diabetes and hypertension was admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) with symptoms of fever, cough and difficulty in breathing.

"He was confirmed having the virus yesterday. He died yesterday of Acute Pulmonary Oedema secondary to H1N1," he told reporters here Thursday.

In that regard, Dr Mohd Ismail again stressed that people with high risk like pregnant women, those with lung disease, obesity, diabetes, asthma, low immunity, heart disease and breathing difficulty to seek immediate treatment at the nearest clinic or hospital as treatment for Influenza A (H1N1) was very effective if treatment was started within 48 hours of onset of symptoms.

He said for those who have normal influenza symptoms and not in the high risk groups they are advised to not panic and rush to get themselves tested.

He said this was because many H1N1 cases in Malaysia, and the rest of the world, would show light symptoms and 98 per cent would recover even without specific medicine.

"Patients with light symptoms are asked to rest and God Willing will recover in three or four days. After recovering they will have the anti-body, so it is not necessary for all cases with light symptoms to undergo H1N1 testing," he said.

Dr Mohd Ismail said H1N1 testing would only be done for cases admitted to ward and those with high risk.

He said this was because the Institute of Medical Research (IMR) which is responsible for testing is swamped with 500 tests a day and that 80-90 per cent were tested negative.

PUTRAJAYA: Health authorities urged the public not to panic and stepped up measures to contain the Influenza A(H1N1) outbreak as the virus claimed its 14th fatality.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Ismail Merican said that as of 8am Thursday, the death toll had reached 14, the latest casualty being a 57-year-old pensioner who was a diabetic and suffered from hypertension.

He was warded at the intensive care unit at the Putrajaya Hospital on Aug 4 and succumbed to acute pulmonary oedema on Wednesday.

Health authorities also recorded 16 new cases in the last 24 hours; all were local tranmissions with two new clusters reported. The number of people who have been infected in Malaysia stood at 1,492.

(AP) ? KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -Malaysia's health minister says three more people infected with swine flu have died, raising the country's death toll related to the virus to 18.

Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai says two children and an elderly patient died at various hospitals Thursday and Friday.

Liow said Saturday that Malaysia has reported 1,578 swine flu cases since May.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has reported three more deaths related to Influenza A (H1N1), taking the total number of fatalities to 18.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Saturday that aside from the deaths, 53 new cases were reported throughout the country.

?The situation very serious. We need the public to cooperate with the authorities to stop the spread of the virus. We can do it if we cooperate,? he said at the opening of a Japan Health Clinic at HSC Medical Centre here Saturday.

Among the three dead is a five-old-boy suffering from encephalitis who died at the Kuantan Hospital on Friday.

The other death is a four-year-old with hyperthyroidism and pneumonia at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital who also died on Friday. The child had had fever, cough and running nose for a week before seeking treatment last Sunday.

The last death was a 63-year-old asthmatic from Selayang with tuberculosis and pneumonia who died Thursday at the Selayang Hospital.

Flu claims five more lives

KUALA LUMPUR: Five more influenza A (H1N1) deaths were reported yesterday.


Among the dead was a 4-year-old who was admitted to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital in Johor Baru on Aug 2 and died on Friday due to severe pneumonia.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said other deaths involved a 5-year-old boy in Kuantan and a 63-year-old in Selayang.

"The boy suffered from encephalitis while the elderly person was an asthmatic patient with a history of tuberculosis," he said after launching Japan Clinic in HSC Medical Centre here, yesterday.

As of yesterday, 64 patients were undergoing treatment in hospitals with 14 of them in the Intensive Care Units.


Liow said the number of positive H1N1 cases in the country was 1,578.

In Johor Baru, a 23-year-old student and a 16-month-old girl were the latest casualties on Friday.

Both the female student of UiTM Segamat and the toddler died of pneumonia.

State Women and Family Development, Welfare and Health Committee chairman Dr Robiah Kosai said the student was having fever for a week before being warded at the Segamat Hospital on July 2.

H1N1: Eight More Deaths Today, Death Toll Is 26

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Eight more deaths relating to Influenza A (H1N1) were confirmed today, bringing the death toll to 26 in the country.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said seven deaths were from the high-risk group and that some were post-reported due to post-mortem to study and confirm the cause of deaths.

He said that a death occurred on Aug 3, followed by two more (Aug 5), four (Aug 6) and another (Aug 8)," he told reporters at a ceremony to re-name Hospital Likas to Hospital Wanita dan Kanak-kanak Sabah here, Sunday.

Liow disclosed that two of the cases were from Sabah.

He said the first involved an obese 24-year-old woman who was warded at the Ranau Hospital on Aug 1, with fever and cough for four days.

She was later referred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) here on Aug 5 and died on the same day.

The other case involved a 74-year-old man with chronic heart disease, who was admitted to QEH on Aug 3, with a history of month-long difficult breathing and fever for just one day.

He died on Aug 6.

Other cases include a 20-year-old female student treated as outpatient for Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) on Aug 1 and found dead in a hostel room, five days later; a 48-year-old man with asthmatic and hypertensive history from Sarawak, and a 37-year-old obese man from Johor.

Liow said at present, there were 62 cases in total, receiving treatment in hospitals and another 13 at intensive care units (ICU), while an additional five suspected H1N1 cases were also at ICU waiting for results.

"So far in Sabah, confirmed cases of H1N1 are 402 cases, two deaths, seven currently in hospitals where one is in ICU, and seven more ILI cases, pending confirmation," he said, adding that there were children involved but he did not have details.

Liow said 35 schools had been closed in Sabah due to the H1N1 outbreak.

KOTA KINABALU: The number of deaths from Influenza A (H1N1) virus rose to 26 nationwide on Sunday with the Health Ministry confirming that eight more people have died from the deadly virus.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the deaths, which between Aug 3 to 8, were confirmed to have resulted from the deadly virus following test results. (One person died on Aug 3, two on Aug 5, four on Aug 6 and the last one on Aug 8)

He said the latest eight deaths involved mainly people in the high risk group though there was one 20-year-old college student who was found dead at her hostel about a week after obtaining outpatient treatment at a hospital.

Among the dead are two Sabahans - a 24-year-old obese woman from Ranau who died of pulmonary oedema after a bout of flu and fever while the other involved a 74-year-old man with a history of heart problem who died of pneumonia and pulmonary oedema.

The others deaths were a 47-year-old patient with asthma in Sarawak and a 37-year-old obese male who died of broncho-pneumonia at the hospital in Johor Baru.

Liow said as at Sunday, there were a total of 62 patients warded in hospitals with 13 in the intensive care units, while an additional five were waiting for test results. The Health Minister also said that in Sabah, 402 confirmed cases had been detected, with seven patients still in hospital and one in ICU.

He said 35 schools had also been closed to date.

He said four of them had underlying risk factors.

He said the six dead were among the 203 new cases reported Monday. This takes the country’s total reported cases to 1,983.

Globally, 208,155 people have been found to be infected by the virus and 1,688 people from 174 countries have died.

PUTRAJAYA: There were six more Influenza A(H1N1)-related deaths reported on Wednesday, bringing the total number of fatalities in the country to 44.

The latest deaths involved a 10-month-old girl, a one-year-old boy, an 18-year-old pregnant woman, a 24-year-old man and two other men in their 60s, Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said here on Wednesday.

He also said that schools with suspected cases should not close entirely unless they could not function due to a high incidence of teachers or students being infected or under quarantine.

Liow said the principals of such schools would have to determine if this were the case, following advice from the state health director and after informing the state education director.

Liow also warned suppliers and traders not to indiscriminately increase the prices of facemasks and hand sanitisers to exploit the demand, adding that stern action would be taken against such profiteers.

Malaysia: Two Babies, Pregnant Woman Among Six New H1N1 Deaths

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 12 (Bernama) -- Two babies and a 26-week pregnant woman were among six new deaths linked to Influenza A (H1N1), bringing the total fatalities due to the disease to 44. Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said these latest deaths involved people infected between Aug 6 and 9 and that their deaths were reported yesterday as linked to H1N1.

"Four of the cases had risk factors like diabetes, hypertension, heart problems or obesity. Their actual dates of death were Aug 7 (four), Aug 9 (one) and Aug 10 (one)," he told a press conference at his ministry here Wednesday.

Liow said one of the children, a 10-month-old girl who did not have any congenital problems, had fever and cough symptoms on Aug 1 and was brought for treatment on Aug 6 but died the next day.

She was admitted because she was having breathing problems but was not given antiviral treatment although a throat swab was taken on Aug 6, he said.

Liow said the other child was a 12-month-old boy with a congenital heart defect who had only recently undergone heart surgery at private hospital before he was referred to a government hospital on Aug 7 after experiencing fever and fits.

He said, however, antiviral treatment was not given although a throat swab was taken on Aug 8 and that the boy died on Aug 9 of surgical complications and pneumonia. It was confirmed he was infected by the H1N1 virus on Aug 10.

"Another case involved an obese 18-year-old housewife who was 26 weeks pregnant. She suffered flu symptoms on Aug 3 and sought treatment at the local health clinic the same day.

"However, her condition became worse and she was admitted into the Intensive Care Unit when she had difficulty breathing on Aug 7. Antiviral treatment was started the same day with a throat swab taken on Aug 9 before she was confirmed to have contracted H1N1 on Aug 10 and died the same day of severe pneumonia ," he said.

Liow said two of the deaths involved elderly men, aged 60 and 62, under the high risk category and that they died of severe pneumonia while the other person, a 24-year-old man without any hisory of illnesses died on Aug 7, of severe pneumonia and septicemia, and was confirmed to be a H1N1 case on Aug 10.

Liow added that 76 patients had been placed in wards and 21 at intensive care units (ICUs) of whom 12 were deemed to be at high risk due to chronic illnesses (10), obesity (one) and post-delivery (one).

A total of 86 patients were also discharged from hospitals yesterday, he said, adding that from today the ministry would no longer be updating on the total number of H1N1 cases in line with guidelines issued by the World health Organisation (WHO).

"WHO's latest guidelines only call for updates on patients hospitalised, the number at ICUs and number of fatalities," he said.

It does not appear that any of the high risk patient received timely anti-virals!

This seems very early to be dropping case counts!

Liow added that 76 patients had been placed in wards and 21 at intensive care units (ICUs) of whom 12 were deemed to be at high risk due to chronic illnesses (10), obesity (one) and post-delivery (one).

This is very careful wording, the numbers here do not seem to indicate that the hospitals are at capacity. It seems a discrepancy!
