Viral fever outbreak forces Thinadhoo schools to suspend classes

MALE, June 28 (HNS) ? Seven schools in Gaaf Dhaal atoll Thinadhoo has suspended classes as residents of the island are experiencing an epidemic outbreak of a viral fever.
Principal of Gaaf Dhaal Atoll Education Centre Abdulla Jameel said the school yesterday suspended all the classes of grades 1-12 to three days as a result of the large number of students and teachers falling ill.
More than 70 secondary students were absent and 33 percent of the teachers were on leave on Sunday, he added.
?It?s been two weeks since the viral fever first started to spread out in the island. We suspended classes based on the recommendation of the regional Education Unit and officials of Education Ministry,? he said.
Jameel stressed that the suspension would be extended if the viral fever continues to spread in the island.
Abu Bakr pre-school along with other five pre-schools, several tuition centres and Qur?an learning centres have also suspended classes.
Sinan Hassan, in-charge at Gaaf Dhaal Atoll Regional Hospital, said despite the hospital?s efforts to control the viral outbreak about 22 patients are hospitalised every day.
