Meeting focuses on pandemic preparations

Manitoba First Nations today begin a three-day conference in Winnipeg on preparing for an influenza pandemic.
The conference will be held at the Convention Centre.
Organizers with the Association of Manitoba Chiefs indicated the conference was meant to look forward at possible pandemics of the 21st century but also at the history of First Nations and disease.
?Given our First Nation history with epidemics of (tuberculosis), influenza and smallpox, we need to be prepared,? said a news release announcing the conference.
The significant effects on aboriginal society of diseases brought by some of the earliest European settlers in Canada are well-documented.
