Marshall Islands health officials asks the national government for an emergency declaration to increase momentum to prevent spread of dengue fever beyond the capital, Majuro.

The Cabinet is expected to declare a state of emergency at its meeting today in response to the outbreak of dengue that has seen 30 confirmed cases of flu-like illness.

The numbers have skyrocketed from the first three announced last Friday by the Ministry of Health in Majuro.

WHO and CDC arrive in Marshall Islands to assist with dengue outbreak

International disease control and prevention teams are expected to arrive in the Marshall Islands today to help combat an outbreak of dengue fever in Majuro.

Marshalls dengue cases rise to 154

Dengue fever cases in the Marshall Islands capital of Majuro have multiplied quickly, jumping to 154 confirmed cases.

The Ministry of Health has also confirmed the first case from an outer island, and says there are suspected cases in Kwajalein, which is the country?s second largest urban centre.

A health official says most of the cases seen to date have been mild, although 10 people remain in hospital.

250 cases of dengue reported in Marshalls

There have been more than 250 confirmed cases of dengue fever in the Marshall Islands, according to Pacific Network, an information sharing network affiliated with the World Health Organization.

Sixty-eight people have been admitted to a Marshall Islands hospital, but there have been no deaths, according to the network. Shortages in hospital supplies are anticipated as the outbreak continues...

With hundreds of confirmed dengue fever cases in the Marshall Islands, the capital city of Majuro has launched an aggressive campaign to eradicate mosquitoes.

It?s being helped by experts from United States agencies, including a Navy team that arrived in Majuro this week to kill mosquitoes with pesticides.

Nearly all the dengue fever cases are on Majuro, with only three confirmed on nearby Arno Atoll.

Marshall Islands Gets More Help for Dengue Outbreak

The number of cases of Dengue Fever has increased ten-fold, from 60 to nearly 600, in the two weeks since the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Cabinet declared a State of Emergency in the small, Pacific Island nation.

Outside assistance is flowing into the Marshall Islands from international partners. On Wednesday, the Taiwan Health Center, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), donated medical supplies that will help the RMI fight against the Dengue Fever situation.

World Health Organization's Western Pacific Office is providing diagnostic kits and mosquito nets.

At the forefront in assistance is the U.S., which is the Marshall's closest ally and provides assistance under the Compact of Free Association. The U.S. sent health teams from various agencies to help stem the spread of the disease.

58 new dengue cases

[SIZE=-1]Fifty-eight new cases of dengue fever were confirmed in the RMI since last week, mostly in Majuro. The number of cases rose from 391 last week to 449 as of this week, said Health Secretary Justina Langidrik (pictured) Wednesday. Several more cases have been confirmed on Arno, but no new cases were seen on Ebeye and Utrik, she said. A special clinic was set up at the Ajeltake Community Center on Tuesday and is continuing daily with a doctor and Public Health nurses to address the high number of dengue fever cases from Ajeltake. ?It will be open all week for people who can?t come to the hospital,? Langidrik said. More rapid test kits for confirming dengue are being brought in, with 500 expected from the Centers for Disease Control and 300 from the World Health Organization. ?We are continuing to see positive cases, but there have been no deaths,? she added.[/SIZE]

Dengue numbers slow

While two weeks ago, dengue cases in Majuro jumped by 44 in a week, only 13 new cases were reported this past week ? bringing the total to 506 ? in the capital, said Health Secretary Justina Langidrik. Most dengue cases are in Majuro, with a few on the outer islands or Ebeye: Three on Ebeye, five on Arno, seven on Utrik, and three on Enewetak...
