Massive blast from Fort Minden rattles parts of Louisiana and Texas

Another accident in the military's process of disposing of old weapons by having defense contractors 'recycle' them into explosives for the mining industry. (See: State shuts down mine, citing danger from Talon explosives)

No injuries are reported due to this latest incident, but homes and businesses were damaged, a freight train had several cars derailed, and whatever was in the plume rained down on properties in the area. One woman in a KSLA video said chips that were as heavy as hail were pelting her car. Explo Systems, the contractor working on the explosives, has not commented yet about what was in the plume and debris.

According to numerous reports, a loud boom was heard in a secluded area of the Louisiana parish, leading Sheriff Gary Sexton to tell a local television station that they ?definitely had something happen? Monday night.

The National Weather Service captured images of the staggering explosion on its Doppler Radar system, explains a report posted online. ?Based on radar analysis, the plume was initially as high as almost 7,200 feet above ground level.?

The agency said the radar imagery is similar to that usually seen with smoke plumes associated with wildfires.

The force of the explosion was felt across a wide area just before 11:40 p.m. Monday, with reports of people feeling the blast from Minden to Shreveport and well beyond. The explosion site was discovered right at sun-up.

The National Weather Service later issued a statement describing radar imagery showing a debris/smoke plume right around 11:30 p.m. approximately one and one half miles southwest of Dixie Inn, which is where the Camp Minden Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant is located. The NWS says the debris plume drifted northwest at about 10 miles per hour and dissipated after about 30 minutes...

WEBSTER PARISH, LA (KSLA) -

Louisiana State Police confirm that there is the possibility of a violation in connection with the explosion in an underground bunker at Camp Minden late Monday night.

The company that handles the explosives is called Explo Systems, Incorporated. They're not offering any comment, but KSLA News 12 has confirmed that the area that's now been sealed off has been investigated by an explosives expert...
