UNION, Maine ? Regional School Unit 40 has issued an alert about several cases of viral meningitis within the community.

Eight cases of viral meningitis reported in Knox County
Diagnoses prompts message from RSU 40 superintendent

WALDOBORO, Maine ?An elementary school student who attends RSU 40 is one of eight people living in Knox County diagnosed with viral meningitis, according to District Superintendent Michael Cormier.

Cormier said a person, a parent of an RSU 40 student who attends an elementary school in a different community, also developed the virus.

The eight cases were diagnosed in the last four to six weeks, she said.
Although viral meningitis is not an illness that requires reporting to the Maine CDC, Pinette said the agency learned of the diagnoses from hospital Emergency Rooms where patients had been treated.
