I thought this was an interesting comment on one of Krugman's latest blogs. I noticed a number of community care centers while walking around uptown Minneapolis over the weekend...

It seems to me that the news commentators, particularly the economic commentators, are really missing a significant consideration regarding the new Health Care Reform law. First, that we frequently use public policy to alter the economic landscape; second, that our American enterprise system is especially good at seizing opportunities that emerge from structural change. So....my prediction is: the health care delivery system will change dramatically and for the better. With 30 million new people coming into the system and a lack of primary care doctors, Community Care Centers will become the base of the new health care delivery system. Nurse practictioners will take the place of primary care doctors for most all preventive care (exams, child immunizations, etc); doctors will be focused on treatment of health problems. Commuinty Care Centers will have the technology to enroll people inthe approrpriate insurance plan; everything done over the Internet. The Broadband Stimulus has a real focus on Telemedicine which will enable the Community Care Centers to deliver health care efficiently and effectively -- connecting to doctors/specialists anywhere in the world when necessary. Drug stores like Walgreens and CVS are perfect candidates to host Community Care Centers especially since companies like Express Scripts will continue to eat into their pharmacy business and hire all available pharmacists. Great opportunity for entrepreneurs to contract with entities like Walgreens and CVS to establish and manage Community Care Centers. Opportunity to start medical claims processing business to compete with companies like Centere that processes medicare claims. Opportuinty to create computer programs and systems that facilitate the new health care delivery system.
In my opinion, this is what economic commentators need to be talking about -- that all of our history demonstrates that major public policy initiatives create enormous opportunities for new business models that drive our economy.
