Meningitis outbreak in S. Sudan?s Upper Nile

April 30, 2013 (JUBA) - The Ministry of Health has declared an outbreak of Meningitis in South Sudan?s Upper Nile, after the disease reportedly killed two people in its Malakal county.

At least 38 suspected cases, the ministry said in a release, have so far been recorded since the first patient was admitted in Malakal teaching hospital on 15 April.

The most affected patient, it added, are between the ages 18-20 years...

JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN ? An outbreak of meningococcal meningitis has claimed two lives and infected dozens of people in Upper Nile State in South Sudan, health officials said Thursday, warning that the number of new cases was still rising.

?In Week 15 there were three cases, in Week 16 there were 19 and this week there are already 16 cases," Dr. John Lagu, the director of emergency preparedness at the Ministry of Health, said, adding that two patients have died of the disease...

The World Health Organization (WHO) and South Sudan announced jointly on Thursday that they will soon launch a major vaccination campaign in the African nation's Upper Nile state to address a meningitis outbreak that has already killed three people.

"Upper Nile schools closed following meningitis outbreak
MALAKAL (15 May.)

The Upper Nile state ministry of education have ordered that all schools in the state be closed due to an outbreak of meningitis in the region.

Kak Akol, the Renk county education director, confirmed that he notified all schools in the county to immediately close for a two week period yesterday, following an outbreak of the disease in state?s capital Malakal.

Schools in Renk county are currently suffering from severe overcrowding which renders them particularly vulnerable to the spread of disease among pupils.

?In fact, yesterday we received an official statement from the Upper Nile state education Director General informing us of the outbreak of meningitis disease in Upper Nile and there area number of infection cases (but) he didn?t disclosed their numbers. The statement ordered us in one word that we should close our schools from today the 15 of May up to 27th of May,? Akol reported."
