I did read that there were cases of 1918 flu where pockets of air formed under the skin and cause popping noises when patients were turned over - like bubble wrap from the sound of it. Also there was skin peeling reported, though the one report says the skin was blackened prior to peeling.

So possibly there could be strange skin symptoms, and like Alert pointed out, maybe sampling missed the infection.

We know from 2009 that severe and fatal H1N1 infections can be much more difficult to detect for several reasons. The virus can be deeper in the lung than the sampling reaches. Also, in a fatal case, the virus can be long gone before the person actually dies from the damage it did. It is also possible that the lung damage can be due to bacterial co-infection, and the samples could not detect the underlying virus.

I interpret the statements about 3 atypical pneumonia deaths and one H1N1 death to mean one confirmed and three probable fatalities. Unless we read about things such as testing the air vents for Legionella or such, it appears that the authorities are assuming the entire outbreak is due to H1N1, even if some of the cases cannot be confirmed.

Also keep in mind, there is no actual mention of "SARS" in the original articles; that is an artifact of the machine translation for "neumonia atipica" - which should be atypical pneumonia.

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico -- Authorities in northern Mexico have confirmed four people died of swine flu in the border state of Chihuahua.

Chihuahua state Gov. Cesar Duarte says six other people have been infected with the H1N1 virus.

Duarte says one woman died of the flu in the capital city of Chihuahua after returning from a trip to Texas. Two traffic police officers in Ciudad Juarez and a woman in the city also have died.

Duarte says the swine flu flare-up is associated with an outbreak in Texas and New Mexico.

Duarte made his comments during a vaccination event Sunday.

Mexico's Health Secretary Jose de Cordoba recently said there has been an increase in seasonal flu cases but not swine flu.

Honestly, I am a bit amazed at the level of reporting here. Most of the rest of the world is not reporting confirmed H1N1 cases anymore, and most of the rest of the world gave up testing ages ago. H1N1 is, to many countries, just a form of the seasonal flu, and gets reported only in summary form. It is very unusual that Chihuahua is giving us this much detail (especially at the risk of inciting panic).

OK. A third fatality is confirmed.

By process of elimination, if there have been three fatalities in Ciudad Juarez itself, two of whom are the officers, and two confirmed fatalities come from that city, one of the officers must be a confirmed fatality. As the other one has now been "discarded", even though he had contact with and the same symptoms as the confirmed case, it is true now that all the "atypical pneumonia" fatalities are either laboratory confirmed or epidemiologically linked to a confirmed case. The article actually says that it was discarded because "it was not possible to confirm the virus", not "we don't think he had the virus".

Chihuahua ─ The Ministry of Health confirmed seven cases of influenza A H1N1 duly verified by chemical analysis, and recorded a total of three deaths from that disease, after 48 hours of receipt of samples and conducting laboratory tests.

The unit also reported that another death that could have been caused by the virus mentioned above, while the agent dismissed the transit of Juarez, who had been counted as Primeri cases since the introduction of the outbreak of H1N1 .

At a press conference, Dr. Sergio Piña Marshall, head of the agency, reported that there are 25 medical alert instances reason: the 7 cases already confirmed, 15 more suspects, but no sample, and 3 others as suspects following but it has samples for study.

Of the confirmed cases, 5 correspond to Juarez, one of the state capital and another in El Paso, Texas, although identified by state health authorities.

Also, there are 14 other cases that were reported as suspicious but in the past 48 hours have been discarded after practicárseles respective medical examinations.

For deaths, the Ministry of Health reported that there are only three confirmed cases, one more is still under study and the other, initially hailed as victim of H1N1, was finally discarded.

I don't think that's right. I think Rodolfo Caballero and Rodolfo Knight are the same individual. I believe "caballero" in Spanish translates to "knight" in English. And I think that is the probable, unconfirmed death.

Also keep in mind, there is no actual mention of "SARS" in the original articles; that is an artifact of the machine translation for "neumonia atipica" - which should be atypical pneumonia.
