Sinaloa reports four cases of screwworm in humans; four others under investigation
Confirmed patients are adults—primarily older adults—with open wounds or other vulnerabilities
Mario Núñez

Culiacán, Sin.—Older adults and patients with open or infected wounds account for the cases of screwworm detected in humans in Sinaloa, where the Secretariat of Health has confirmed four infections, with another four currently under investigation.

State Secretary of Health Cuitláhuac González Galindo reported that the identified patients are from Culiacán, Mazatlán, and Rosario; none have died to date.

According to the state official, the department has examined 13 suspected cases: four were ruled out, four were confirmed, and four remain pending diagnosis.

He further explained that some of the patients have conditions that increase their vulnerability to infestation—such as being bedridden or having exposed lesions—which facilitate the presence of larvae.

Regarding their medical progress, he stated that those diagnosed have responded well to treatment, which involves removing the larvae and administering medication to treat the lesions and prevent complications.

González Galindo warned that the fly responsible for transmitting the screwworm is still present in Sinaloa, posing an ongoing risk of new cases in both humans and animals.

In response, the Secretariat of Health is conducting outreach and training initiatives to ensure the timely detection of potential infestations.

In this regard, he noted that 300 workers who conduct house-to-house visits received training this week.

Additionally, he indicated that efforts are underway to strengthen coordination with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock to expand preventive measures and address the presence of this pest within the state. Health authorities continue to urge vigilance regarding open wounds—especially in individuals with limited mobility or those requiring ongoing care—as these can pose a risk for this type of infestation.
