Measles confirmed in Northern Michigan, weeks after whooping cough

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, MI -- Not even a month after a Traverse City area school was forced to close for a whooping cough outbreak, county health officials are now dealing with another serious illness.

Grand Traverse County has two confirmed cases of measles. Both involve adults not associated with schools who were not immunized and had recently returned from traveling to the Philippines, according to a statement from county Health Officer Wendy Trute...

Measles spans two counties, health officials urge vaccination

TRAVERSE CITY ? Health officials in Grand Traverse and Leelanau Counties are closely monitoring five people infected with measles, the state's only cases confirmed so far this year.

Officials said unimmunized students would have to stay home from school for 21 days from the time the last case appears if the disease makes its way into a classroom, and they're monitoring close contacts to try and prevent that from happening.

Two children and one adult from Leelanau County are the latest to come down with the highly contagious respiratory illness...

TRAVERSE CITY ? Local health officials breathed a sigh of relief when no new measles cases turned up before the new year.

Confirmed cases held steady at five, and officials are confident that the disease can no longer spread now that those patients are on the mend.

The measles' maximum incubation period is 21 days, though most people who are infected show symptoms within 14 days of exposure. Health workers monitored people who came into contact with the five cases for the full three weeks to be sure no symptoms appeared...
