ST. PAUlL, Minn. - The Minnesota Department of Health is confirming three more cases of measles since health officials announced a case of infant measles Mar. 4.

The MDH is working with Hennepin County Public Health staff in investigating the four cases.
The latest trio of cases were reported in children between 23 months and 4 years of age. They live in Minneapolis, and all likely acquired their infections in the city.

All cases were contracted between Mar. 1-9. Two of the three new cases were hospitalized. All are recovering...

Three more children under the age of five have developed cases of measles in Minneapolis, state health officials reported Thursday, including two Somali children who were not vaccinated because of fears about the vaccine safety.

In all, four cases of measles have been reported in Minneapolis in the last two weeks, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. Three of the children were hospitalized, and all are said to be recovering...

Minnesota Measles Outbreak

(ABC 6 NEWS) - There's an outbreak of the measles in Minnesota.

There have already been 11 confirmed cases of the virus in the state. Roughly half of those people hadn't been vaccinated, and many are Somali.

"The problem is communication and education and lack of information," said Omar Hassan, the owner of Robland Home Healthcare.

Or an abundance of the wrong information.

"There's a fear of the vaccine based on ignorance. There's a lot of rumors that the vaccine has a correlation with Autism which is a big deal for the Somali community," said Hassan.

That correlation came from a report by Doctor Andrew Wakefield.

"That has now been disproven. The author of that study has actually lost his medical license, and the journal has retracted his publication, because they determined he had erroneous information," said Linda Haeussinger, the Public Health Nurse Manager for Olmsted County.

But many in the Somali community are still reluctant to give their children the MMR vaccine...

...Although they aren't getting as much attention, there is also:

* two new measles cases in New York City that were diagnosed in residents that had traveled to Romania and India
* two new measles cases in Tennessee
* one measles case in California in a case that involved a 27-year-old who got measles while traveling to the Philippines and Thailand...

Fortunately, there have been no new measles cases in the measles outbreak in Boston and Clark County, Washington.

Minnesota Outbreak Poses Local Risks & Concerns

Madison WI - Thursday, March 31, 2011 - As of yesterday morning the Minnesota Department of Health reports 14 confirmed cases of measles. Thirteen of the cases have been linked to a case in which the infection was acquired in Kenya and one case in which the infection was acquired in Florida. Cases have ranged in age from 4 months to 51 years old. Five of the cases were too young to receive vaccine, six were of age but were not vaccinated, and three have unknown vaccine status. There have been eight hospitalizations and no deaths. The majority of the reported cases were in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area.

Given the amount of travel between Dane County and the Twin Cities, and the number of Dane County residents attending colleges in that area, this outbreak is a little closer to home than the physical distance suggests. While outbreaks of this size appear to be relatively small and slow moving, the risks that they present can be significant, especially to unvaccinated individuals and groups...

The Minnesota measles outbreak of 2011 continues.

The state health department announced this afternoon three more confirmed cases of measles, bringing the state tally this year to 20. That's twice the number of confirmed cases seen in Minnesota during the previous ten years.

Two of the new cases reported today are part of an outbreak that started in February when a 2-year-old acquired was infected during a trip to Kenya. That outbreak total now stands at 17 related cases, according to the Minnesota Department of Health.

The health department also reported today an isolated measles case in which the infection source is unknown. That report brings the total of isolated measles cases this year to three.

There have been ten hospitalizations and no deaths...

The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting another confirmed case of measles, which brings the total linked to an ongoing outbreak in Hennepin County to 18...

....Overall, 13 of the 21 patients with measles this year have required hospitalization ? up from 10 hospitalizations last week, the health department reported this morning. There have been no deaths.

Minneapolis — State health officials convened a vaccination awareness forum Wednesday at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota to re-energize doctors and public health workers who are discouraged that a growing number of Minnesotans are ignoring their advice to make sure their children are vaccinated.

The forum occurred as the Minnesota Department of Health confirmed two additional cases of measles bring the state's outbreak total to 23.

Public health leaders say the outbreak is not surprising given Minnesota's declining vaccination rate. In just two years the state's overall vaccination ranking has slipped from seventh best in the nation to 20th place...

Another Metro Measles Case, This Time in Wright County

An Easter visit resulted in a case of measles for one Hennepin County resident.

Health officials say the victim visited a Wright County resident over the holiday and came home with the measles. Measles appear typically eight to 12 days after someone is exposed, and the first symptom is a fever.

Some 23 cases of measles have been reported in Hennepin County over the past few months--19 people, mostly children, had to be hospitalized. Health officials say the children had not been immunized...

A Hennepin County resident who traveled to Wright County during Easter weekend later developed measles, so local health officials are asking those with symptoms to immediately contact their health care provider.

Those who may have come into contact with the Hennepin County individual have been notified by the Minnesota Department of Health and have been given advice of what to do if they did not have immunity from the highly infectious disease.

A 1-year-old is critically ill after visit to Kenya. State officials say the cases show the need for vaccinations.

Two young children in Dakota County are hospitalized -- one in critical condition -- in the second measles outbreak in Minnesota this year, state health officials said Friday.

The 1-year-old in critical condition fell ill in early August following a trip to Kenya, where the disease is widespread, according to the Minnesota Department of Health. A 15-month-old became ill after visiting the family of the first child.

Two Dakota County infants hospitalized after contracting measles

Two unvaccinated Dakota County infants ? 15 and 12 months old ? have been hospitalized after contracting measles this month, according to a Friday release from the Minnesota Department of Health.
The younger infant, who is in critical condition, became ill in early August shortly after returning from Kenya where measles is currently endemic.

The child was likely infectious from Aug. 4 through Aug. 17.
The second child became ill after visiting the family of the first child and is also hospitalized.
Neither were vaccinated against measles.
