Tuberculosis Cases in Blue Earth County at 15-Year High

(Mankato, MN) ? The Minnesota Department of Health is reporting 4 active cases of tuberculosis in Blue Earth County so far this year.

That?s the highest number in Blue Earth County in at least 15 years. It?s also the most of any county in the state in 2018, outside of the Twin Cities and Rochester. For each active TB case, there are generally dozens more that are latent.

A latent case is when a person is infected with TB bacteria that are not active, so they have no symptoms and can not spread the disease to others.

Those with active infections can spread the disease and may require isolation and daily monitoring for months.

The latest data also show Mower, Nicollet and Rice counties each have one active TB case so far in 2018...

MANKATO ? Blue Earth County is offering tuberculosis testing to members of the Minnesota State University community who had close contact with someone who was sickened by the bacteria.

Some people associated with the university received a letter from MSU and Blue Earth County Public Health dated Tuesday warning they might have been exposed to tuberculosis, which is a bacterial infection that can be fatal if not treated...
