A few weeks ago, KTVO reported an outbreak of pertussis, or whooping cough among Amish communities in Schuyler County.

The Adair County Health Department says the disease continues to be associated with Amish communities in Adair County and other surrounding counties...

Two Probable Cases of Pertussis Identified in Riverview Gardens School District<o></o>​

The Riverview Gardens School District has been notified by the St. Louis County Health Department that a student at Highland Elementary and another child at Central Middle School have probable cases of pertussis (whooping cough). The Health Department reports a rise in pertussis cases in schools and communities for the last several months.


Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air by coughing, and is required to be reported to the health department. ..

St. Louis County Health Officials are tracking a whooping cough outbreak. 10 school districts in the county have reported cases of whooping cough or pertussis. Students in 24 schools are battling the illness. There have been 65 cases county-wide in recent months. There were only 26 during the same period last year...

...There have been 426 cases statewide this year, a one-third increase above the five-year median.

St. Louis County has recorded 126 cases, the most of any area in the state. Most cases are among children representing 10 school districts.

Still, the cases in the county are the lowest in the last three years. Last year, St. Louis County had recorded 278 cases by this date. The total was 146 in 2008...

Whooping cough surging in St. Louis County

The Saint Louis County Department of Health said today it is tracking a recent surge in the number of confirmed of a highly contagious illness. Pertussis, also known as "whooping cough," is a respiratory disease caused by the bacterium bordetella pertussis.

Pertussis got the name "whooping cough" for causing uncontrollable, violent coughing which often makes it hard to breathe. After coughing fits, someone with pertussis often needs to take deep breaths which result in a "whooping" sound. The CDC says pertussis most commonly affects infants and young children and can be fatal, especially in babies less than 1 year of age.

Of the 185 cases reported among St. Louis County residents this year, 123 have occurred during the past six weeks. The monthly totals have increased from nine cases in September to 46 in October and 91 in November.

Incidences of whooping cough have been reported in 11 county school districts and in three private schools.
