The health ministry of Mongolia said on Wednesday that two bubonic plague suspected cases that were reported in the province of Khovd that is located in the western part of the country have been confirmed by lab tests.

Head of the public relations and surveillance department at the ministry, Dorj Narangerel, said during a press conference that the newly diagnosed patients are a 27 years old citizen and his 17 years old brother and they are currently receiving treatment at two different hospitals in the provinc..

But there are some 500 who these contacts have been in touch with, say reports.

The bacterial infection can kill adults within 24 hours if not treated in time, according to the World Health Organisation.

Pansoch Buyainbat, 27, and his brother, 17, are being treated in separate hospitals in Khovd province in western Mongolia.

The older brother is said to be in a “critical” condition.

Russian region near Mongolia testing rodents for plague

Moscow (AFP) - Russia said Wednesday that a remote Far Eastern region near Mongolia had begun testing rodents for bubonic plague after cases of the disease were confirmed in Mongolia and China.

Rospotrebnadzor, the state consumer safety watchdog, said tests had begun on rodents such as marmots in the eastern Siberian region of Burytia, which borders Mongolia.

The results of serologic and other tests to "detect plague antigen conducted in 2020 have been negative," the watchdog's regional branch said in a statement.

Public health officials have appealed to residents of the mountainous Tuva and Altai regions not to hunt or eat marmots after two bubonic plague cases were confirmed in Mongolia last week.

A boy aged 15 has died from bubonic plague in Mongolia as dozens of people who contacted him are in isolation over the deadly disease.

The fatality comes as Russia and China were warned that they are vulnerable to the spread of the Black Death...

Mongolian teen dies of bubonic plague caught from infected marmot

Beijing — A 15-year-old boy has died in western Mongolia of bubonic plague, the country's national news agency reported. The Health Ministry said laboratory tests confirmed the teenager died of plague that he contracted from an infected marmot, according to the Montsame News Agency.

The case prompted the government to impose a quarantine on a portion of the province of Gobi-Altai. Montsame said 15 people who had contact with the boy were isolated.

In an unrelated case in neighboring China, a patient who was infected with plague in the northern region of Inner Mongolia is improving, according to China's official Xinhua News Agency.

ULAN BATOR, July 17 (Xinhua) -- A suspected case of bubonic plague was reported in Khovd Province in western Mongolia on Friday, according to the country's National Center for Zoonotic Diseases (NCZD).

A six-year-old child in Uyench soum (administrative subdivision) of the province is now under isolation at a local hospital, said Nyamdorj Tsogbadrakh, director of the NCZD.

The child showed symptoms of high-grade fever and skin rashes after playing with a dead marmot, the official added.

A total of seven suspected cases of bubonic plague have been reported across the country so far this year, three of which had been confirmed by laboratory test results...

An administrative subdivision of Zavkhan province in western Mongolia has been quarantined for an indefinite period after a suspected case of bubonic plague was reported on Saturday, local government said Sunday.

A 39-year-old resident of Uliastai soum has showed symptoms of high-grade fever, headache and muscle aches after eating marmot meat with his family a week ago. He is now under isolation at a local hospital.

So far, at least nine people who had contacted the person have been isolated at their homes.

According to the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases, up to 17 out of all 21 provinces in Mongolia are now at risk of bubonic plague...

ULAN BATOR, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- A 42-year-old man died of bubonic plague in Khovd province in western Mongolia on Tuesday night, the country's health ministry said Wednesday.

The man was found to have bought two dead marmots before his death, Dorj Narangerel, head of public relations and surveillance department at the ministry, told a press conference.

Narangerel urged citizens not to hunt marmots or eat marmot meat to prevent the spread of bubonic plague.

Although hunting marmots is illegal in Mongolia, many Mongolians regard the rodent as a delicacy and ignore the law.

Since the beginning of this year, 12 suspected cases of bubonic plague have been reported across the Asian country, four of which were confirmed by laboratory tests...

The Mongolia National Center for Zoonotic Disease reported on their Facebook page of an additional suspected human bubonic plague case in western Mongolia.

The case is a 37-year-old man from Tsetseg soum, Khovd province and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

It is reported the patient ate marmot meat...
