This one is closer to land than the other large Sumatra quake with the Indian Ocean tsunami. Since it's not in a trench, perhaps the tsunami potential is lower.

PADANG, Indonesia, Sept 30 (Reuters) - A strong earthquake of magnitude 7.9 struck off the city of Padang on the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island on Wednesday, damaging houses, bringing down bridges and starting fires, a witness said.

The quake was felt around the region, with some high-rise buildings in the neighbouring city state of Singapore, 275 miles (440 km) away, evacuating their staff.

A regional tsunami warning was issued, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre and Japan's meterological agency said. It was unclear if there were any casualties.

"Hundreds of houses have been damaged along the road. There are some fires, bridges are cut and there is extreme panic here maybe because water pipes are broken and there is flooding in the streets," said a Reuters witness in the city.

Phone lines were down.

The depth of the tsunami was measured at 85 km, the United States Geological Survey said.

Indonesia is situated in a belt of intense seismic activity known as the "Pacific Ring of Fire". The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude of the quake at 7.9.

A series of tsunamis earlier smashed into the Pacific island nations of American and Western Samoa killing possibly more than 100 people, some washed out to sea, destroying villages and injuring hundreds, officials said on Wednesday.

Padang, the capital of Indonesia's West Sumatra province, sits on one of the world's most active fault lines along the "Ring of Fire" where the Indo-Australia plate grinds against the Eurasia plate to create regular earth tremors and sometimes quakes. It lies

A 9.15 magnitude quake, with its epicentre roughly 600 km (373 miles) northwest of Padang, caused the 2004 tsunami which killed 232,000 people in Indonesia's Aceh province, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, and other countries across the Indian Ocean.

Geologists have long said Padang, with a population of 900,000, may one day be destroyed by a huge earthquake because of its location.

"Padang sits right in front of the area with the greatest potential for an 8.9 magnitude earthquake," said Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, a geologist at the Indonesian Science Institute, earlier this year.

"The entire city could drown," in a tsunami triggered by such a quake, he warned.

Powerful 7.6-magnitude quake strikes Indonesia

JAKARTA - A powerful 7.6-magnitude quake struck off Indonesia's Sumatra island Wednesday, the country's geophysics and meterology agency said.

The quake struck at sea at 5:16 pm (1016 GMT) 78 kilometres (48 miles) southwest of Padang city in West Sumatra province, the agency said on its website.

Local news channel Metro TV reported buildings had collapsed and fires had started in Padang, a city of 900,000, where panicked residents had run onto the streets as the quake hit.

Large buildings were "destroyed" and communications cut off by the Indonesia quake said a geology agency official giving no other details.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

A quake on the main island of Java earlier this month killed 123 people.

In Singapore, tremors were reportedly felt in various parts of the country.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (CNN) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 struck Indonesia on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake was recorded about 33 miles from Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra, which is home to more than 800,000 people.

Several buildings were damaged, Metro TV reported. People were seen running out of their homes and toward the hills.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami watch for Indonesia, India, Thailand and Malaysia.

NOAA could not immediately say whether the quake generated a tsunami, but such advisories are issued when a quake has the potential to cause one.

On Tuesday, a magnitude 8.0 quake -triggered tsunami killed at least 84 in the Samoan islands and Tonga.

Information from Climatology Meteorology and Geophysics, SR 7.6 earthquake occurred at 17:16:09 pm, Wednesday, September 30, 2009.

The earthquake occurred at 0.84 south latitude location and 99.65 East Longitude. The epicenter was detected at a depth of 71 kilometers.

"I hope not like the earthquake in West Java, for a bit in the epicenter," said Priyadi.

Earthquake in West Java is Priyadi is based in Tasikmalaya on Friday, September 4 last. Earthquake in West Java, killing 74 people.

’Many Houses’ Destroyed in West Sumatra Quake: Rescue Agency

Sept. 30 (Bloomberg) -- A 7.6-magnitude earthquake that struck off Indonesia’s West Sumatra province destroyed houses and rescue teams are attempting to reach the area, the National Search and Rescue Agency said.

“We have received reports that many house have been destroyed in West Sumatra,” Gagah Prakoso, spokesman for the agency, said by phone in Jakarta. “We have deployed teams of rescuers from nearby branches to the location. We are still waiting for more detailed information.”

A tsunami in the Pacific caused by a magnitude-8 quake yesterday may have killed more than 130 people in Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga, as well as prompting alerts for waves hitting Japan and the U.S. west coast.

The toll in Samoa, where 62 people are confirmed dead, may rise to 100 as rescue teams reach isolated villages, Radio New Zealand reported, citing an estimate by the nation’s Disaster Management Office. At least 24 people were killed in American Samoa and five in Tonga, it said.

"A number of hotels in Padang have been destroyed,'' Indonesian geophysics and meteorology agency tsunami warning head Rahmat Triyono said, adding the agency did not release a tsunami alert.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii however issued a tsunami watch for Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Thailand.

"Up to now we haven't been able to reach Padang, communications have been cut,'' Triyono said.

The quake struck at sea at 5:16 pm (1016 GMT) at a fairly deep 87 kilometres (54 miles), 53 kilometres northwest of Padang city in West Sumatra province, the United States Geological Survey said.

Local news channel Metro TV reported fires amid the wreckage in Padang, a city of 900,000, where panicked residents had run onto the streets as the quake hit.

There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

The quake was felt in the capital Jakarta 940 kilometres away.

Geologists have said Padang, which lies near the colliding Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates, is the most likely in the country to fall victim to the next major quake.

The city is most at risk from a final segment along the zone shifting to unleash a massive amount of energy.

The zone's other segments have already cracked, including a large portion off Aceh, at the northern tip of Sumatra, which triggered the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 220,000 people.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire,'' where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

I looked at the seismograph monitoring one of our volcanoes and there is a considerable difference between the 2 quakes today - the Sumatra one shows less shaking here.

I believe the waves arriving at about 10:29 UTC are from the Sumatra quake, while the large ones nearer the top are from Samoa.
