Ninety percent of the public would not travel to Mexico because of the recent outbreak of swine flu, and more than 60% would also rule out travelling to the US, according to our latest viewers? poll.
Just 10% of the respondents said that the outbreak would not make them avoid travelling anywhere. Twenty nine percent said they would just avoid travelling to Mexico.
The outbreak of swine flu began in Mexico and has spread to 21 countries around the world, with the US seeing the most confirmed cases of the virus outside Mexico. However, cases outside Mexico appear to be milder than those in Mexico, with most people on the road to recovery. All deaths have occurred in Mexico with the exception of one Mexican toddler dying in the state of Texas after being brought to America.
The Irish government has advised people to avoid all non-essential travel to Mexico, in line with many countries throughout the world. A number of UK tour operators have cancelled their flights to the popular holiday resort of Cancun in Mexico. However, there is no outright ban on travel to affected areas, and Irish citizens have not been advised to avoid travelling to the US or other areas where people may have the virus.
