Life-threatening virus affecting Bozeman dogs

BOZEMAN, Mont. - Local veterinarians are urging dog owners to keep their pets away from dog parks, groomers, and kennels because they could be contagious with a life-threatening virus with symptoms similar to kennel cough.

Veterinarian Jarrod Moss of Creekside Veterinary Hospital says this holds true for dogs that are up-to-date on their vaccinations. Kathy Quigley, owner of Foothills Veterinary Hospital, says this is the worst outbreak she's seen in 17 years.

Moss tells NBC Montana his hospital has seen 150 cases of kennel cough this month. He says some cases that go untreated could turn into pneumonia. Moss confirmed there were at least 10 to 20 cases of pneumonia in July alone. Quigley says she knows of three dogs who have died during this outbreak...

Unknown outbreak of severe canine disease found in Montana

MONTANA -

The Montana Department of Livestock is working with local veterinarians to monitor an outbreak of a severe canine respiratory disease in Montana. DOL is aware of sick dogs in Bozeman, Livingston, Billings, Butte, Roundup, and Red Lodge. Several clinics are seeing multiple sick dogs per day.

?Veterinarians have reported dogs with coughing, difficulty breathing, and fever, similar to a severe case of kennel cough,? states Dr. Tahnee Szymanski, Assistant State Veterinarian. ?Dogs with more critical infections have developed pneumonia which has been fatal in a small number of animals.

Previous vaccination for kennel cough does not appear to be protective, and young animals seem particularly sensitive. Several veterinarians in the Bozeman area are working with university and industry diagnostic labs to collect samples from pets that have been sick in hopes of identifying the cause of illness.

Canine influenza has been suspected as the potential cause of the outbreak due to the severity of illness, the lack of protection from prior vaccination, and preliminary tests suggestive of influenza exposure...
