Link suspected between PNG fish deaths and mining spill

Government officials in New Ireland province in Papua New Guinea confirm that fish are dying as the result of a probable chemical spill from a gold and copper mine on Simberi island.....

The company uses a "deep sea tailings placement system" to dispose of its mine waste and discoloration of the water in the discharge area is reported.

The multi-national gold mining company denies responsibility for the animal deaths and human skin problems, saying it has not been processing ore while doing repairs on an "onshore tailings mixing tank." (Note, however, that in the first article the company project manager is quoted as saying that there is evidence of a spill. :magnify
