Malaria claims one more life

MUMBAI: Another death due to malaria occurred on Sunday taking the toll of malaria deaths this month to four. The 19-year-old boy, who was originally from Bihar, had been staying in Byculla and working in a leather shop for two months. He had fever for quite some time and was admitted to Nair hospital on June 15, but succumbed to the disease.

The malaria audit carried out by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the first half of June showed that the disease has been under control.

The BMC said malaria positivity is currently 2% in the city, compared to 5.82% last year. Of 1,14,100 samples collected till June 17, there were 2,200 that tested positive.

Malaria claims another life, takes toll to six

MUMBAI: A 54-year-old alcoholic from Worli Dairy died of malaria on Monday, taking the total number of malaria deaths this month to six.

On Tuesday, BMC corporators across party lines slammed the civic administration for its inability to curb malaria deaths. They also alleged that the civic body was deflating figures of patients admitted and tested positive for malaria.

Though BMC officials claimed that the slide positivity rate (SPR) of malaria had dipped this year, elected representatives maintained that there was no real improvement. "In June last year, the SPR was 5.89%. This year until June 25, it had dipped to 1.7%. We are aware that the cases will increase in July, but we will continue our anti-malaria drive," said additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar. "We have been following up with different agencies on their mosquito-proofing measures. Our hospitals are adequately equipped to tackle cases," she added.

51-yr-old man dies of malaria

A 51-year-old man from Prabhadevi died of malaria on Tuesday. According to data from the civic body, he was an alcohol addict and was admitted to a hospital on Sunday. with this death, the toll has risen to seven. On Wednesday, 47 patients tested positive for malaria. HTC

MUMBAI: Malaria claimed its eighth victim this monsoon after a 43-year-old man from Kandivli died on Monday night, a few hours after being admitted to a private nursing home.

More than 300 people have tested positive for malaria in the last five days. On Tuesday, 31 patients were admitted to civic hospitals for malaria, while 198 people were hospitalized due to fever.

Praja Foundation Report: Malaria Could Become An Outbreak

According to a report by the Praja Foundation, malaria could be a major cause of worry for Mumbai.

Former cabinet secretary and chairman of Praja Foundation, B G Deshmukh, has forwarded a written report to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, asking him to establish a team to deal with the risks the city is confronting.

The report stated, "We urge you to set up a task force on health comprising key experts and officials directly under you and the Health Minister that can study the above and suggest immediate measures to tackle this heath hazard on a war footing. The current situation calls for your urgent attention and prudent action."

As per the facts amassed by Praja, more than 2,100 individuals lost their lives because of malaria between the year 2008 and 2010.
