Girl dies allegedly after eating sweets from temple

|MUMBAI: A 15-year-old Bhayander girl died after she allegedly consumed food and sweets from a nearby Jain temple on Tuesday. However, temple authorities insisted that the teen died of cholera and not food poisoning.

The girl was among the 31 people who were being treated for vomiting and diarrhoea after they attended a function at the temple. "Four of them are suspected to have cholera," said a source.

Meanwhile, health officials of the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) visited the areas where the patients reside and advised locals to boil the water before drinking.

"We are awaiting the girl's autopsy report to find out the reason for her death" a civic official said.

MUMBAI: The fear of cholera sneaking up on the city looms large on the horizon as Bhayander (W) reports five confirmed cases, including the death of a 15-year-old girl.

Five confirmed cases of cholera, including the death of a 15-year-old girl to the disease, have been detected in Bhayander (West).

Though state and civic health officials have reportedly swung into action to contain the dreaded disease, doctors claim nothing worthwhile has been done so far.

Panic spread in Bhayander when Charmi Shah (15) and 31 others fell sick after consuming food and sweets at a Jain temple. On Wednesday, Charmi was admitted to Umrao Hospital with complaints of vomiting and diarrhoea and the next day, she died of cholera. Though there had been efforts to pass it off as a case of severe food-poisoning, the hospital said Charmi had tested positive for the hanging drop diagnostic test for cholera. To confirm that she had indeed died of cholera, her stool sample has been sent for the mandatory culture test. Four of the remaining 31 have also been diagnosed with cholera and undergoing treatment in different private hospitals. In fact, according to some doctors in the Mira Road-Bhayander region, the count might be even more as several patients, complaining of severe vomiting and diarrhoea, have been admitted to private clinics. However, Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation deputy municipal commissioner Sambhaji Panpatte could confirm about the five cases.
