Measles in the NWT

YELLOWKNIFE 22 February 2019 - The Acting Chief Public Officer is advising all Northwest Territory residents of a laboratory confirmed case of measles.
This case involves an individual who travelled from an international destination to Inuvik by airplane. The journey returning to Inuvik took them through Yellowknife and Norman Wells on February 13.
Priority contact tracing is being done in Inuvik at this time. Within six days of exposure to an active measles case preventive treatment can reduce the risk of developing measles. Public health staff are identifying those at risk that may be eligible for this treatment.
Residents in the Inuvik area can speak to a public health practitioner by calling (867) 678-5579.
The Department of Health and Social Services and all Health and Social Services Authorities are beginning a contact tracing exercise for other individuals potentially at risk.
People born before 1970 or who have received two doses of measles-containing vaccine are protected from the disease while others remain at risk.
At risk NWT residents who traveled by plane between Yellowknife, Norman Wells and Inuvik on February 13th should monitor for the following symptoms...
