Namibia: Five Die of Cholera in Kunene

FIVE people have died of cholera while close to 50 are being treated following an outbreak of the disease in the Kunene Region on Tuesday.

The worst hit area is the Etanga village in the Epupa Constituency.

Four of the five people who lost their lives to cholera are from the Etanga area, 100 kilometres west of Opuwo.

The other victim is from the Okangwati settlement, about 120km south of Opuwo, in the same constituency...

Namibia: Ministry Probes Cholera Outbreak Source

THE Ministry of Health and Social Services is investigating the source of the cholera outbreak that has killed seven people in the Kunene Region since last week.

Five of the victims died on Friday and two others on Sunday, while 85 new cases are under observation. Most of the dead are from Etanga village and Opuwo town...

Namibia: Ministry Suspected Cholera Outbreak Last Year

THE Ministry of Health and Social Services has confirmed that the outbreak of cholera was first suspected as far back as early November last year.

The ministry's spokesperson, Ester Paulus, yesterday said between 16 and 18 November 2013, numerous diarrhoea cases were being treated at health facilities in the region and that all patients with cholera-like symptoms were tested and the results came out negative for Vibrio Cholerae...

...Paulus said the regions had an overall 89 cases of suspected cholera during the period of 16 November 2013 to 5 January 2014.

She also said the Opuwo District Hospital currently admitted 56 suspected cholera patients...

Namibia: Cholera Death Toll Rises to Eight

ONE more person has died of cholera, bringing the total number of deaths to eight, the Ministry of Health and Social Services announced yesterday.

The health ministry said that the number of suspected cholera cases treated at Kunene Region health facilities rose from 89 on Wednesday to 276 by yesterday...

WINDHOEK ? The cholera outbreak in the Kunene Region in north-western Namibia, has been brought under control.

However, health officials remain in the field to ensure that all emerging new cases are being attended to and referred to health facilities for early treatment. To date a total of 485 cholera cases were treated at health facilities, while only 15 deaths were reported. One patient is currently receiving treatment in the Opuwo District Hospital, according to a statement issued yesterday by the Ministry of Health and Social Services...

Namibia: Khomas Cholera Cases Not From Opuwo

THE cholera strain that killed one person and left another hospitalised in Windhoek this week is different from the one that killed 15 people in Opuwo, although the man in isolation is from that district, health experts said yesterday.

A 60-year-old Babylon informal settlement resident died of cholera after he was admitted at Katutura State Hospital, while a hird case, involving a child from Dolam in Katutura, was treated and discharged this week...

As of 3 March 2014, 39 cholera cases and 3
deaths have been reported in Katutura,
Windhoek. All patients have been discharged
from the hospitals.
The Red Cross is busy erecting tents for the
CTCs and has requested DDRM to assist with
better and stronger tents; as well as expertise
from the National Defence Force to assist in
putting up tents.
Needs identified include provision/distribution of
water purification sachets to communities,
improved active surveillance of new cases and
strengthening of the prevention campaign in
different languages and media.

Concerns in Namibia as cholera outbreak reaches nation?s capital

...We are here to assess the situation in the informal settlements after a cholera outbreak in early February. This is the first time cholera has been identified in Windhoek. It is a different strain from the outbreak which is affecting northern regions, and as of yet, there is no indication it will spread through the capital. However, health care workers are concerned. There have now been 39 suspected cases of cholera in Windhoek, with three confirmed cases. Following the death of a 60 year old man in Katutura, just eight kilometres outside the capital, the Namibia Red Cross Society moved quickly. Five teams of volunteers were deployed to conduct 25 interviews with residents to better understand the situation and plan a response...
