BIRATNAGAR, June 27: Quarantine office in Jogbani customs has destroyed around 5,000 heads of broiler chicken and chicks imported illegally from India in two months.

The government has been putting under close observation the imports of poultry products from the southern neighbor where frequent bird-flu outbreak was recorded last year.

Customs Revenue Patrol of Armed Police Force (APF) has buried 50 heads of broiler chicken which were being ferried by cycle through Metarwa customs point of Biratnagar on Sunday alone. Satya Narayan Chaudhari, chief of the quarantine office at the customs, said cases of illegal imports of poultry products is on the rise for last couple of weeks.

Arjun Sapkota, Deputy Superintendent of APF at Customs Revenue Patrol said smuggling of poultry products by using bicycles are going up in bordering districts. ?We have issued special instruction to our patrolling team to maintain strict surveillance along the border to check illegal movement of poultry products,? Sapkota said.

Among the poultry products illegally imported to Nepal, quarantine officials said, chicks topped the list. During April alone, around 2,000 heads of chicks were seized and destroyed by quarantine and APF personnel.

Despite mounting challenge to check the cross border movement of poultry goods, quarantine offices along the border are running short of the required staff.

?We are facing difficulties to control the illegal movement of poultry goods with just three staffers available at our office,? said Chaudhari. AFF?s DSP Sapkota said trend of importing dressed meat is on the rise after the restriction on the movement of live chicken.

Prabhakar Pathak, director general of Department of Livestock Service (DLS), told Republca that quarantine offices and Armed Police Force are jointly beefing up border patrolling and conducting strict checking to control illegal flow of poultry products to Nepal.

?We have been confiscating and destroying the poultry products imported from India to minimize the possibility of transmission of bird-flu to Nepal,? Pathak said. ?We are maintaining close watch on imports of those products with out our permission from the countries where bird-flu cases are recurrent.?

As per the existing provision, traders have to acquire import permission from Recommendation Committee at DLS before importing the poultry products from countries that have recurrent cases of bird-flu.
