Bird flu confirmed in Ilam as well


ILAM, FEB 05 -

Bird flu has been confirmed in Phakphok VDC-2 of Ilam district. An emergency meeting of the district-level bird flu disease control committee held on Sunday confirmed the avian influenza virus in Phakphok.

Dr. Kumar Singh Khatri of the District Livestock Office, Ilam, said the samples of the dead chicken were sent to the Regional Office, Biratnagar, on January 19 for laboratory test. The area has been declared 'infected site' and high alert has been maintained against bird flu from today.

Dr Satya Narayan Shah of Animal Quarantine, Kakadbhitta, said bird flu was confirmed in the sample tests done in Livestock Disease Research Lab, Tripureswor, and Veterinary Laboratory Agency, U.K.

Also, authorities in Ilam and Panchthar districts on Wednesday slaughtered 16 chickens and five pigeons which were hidden by the people of Ghurbise Panchami, the bird flu site in Ilam and also an area along the border of the two districts.

Authorities destroyed a total of 227 chickens, 463 eggs and seven pigeons on Monday and Tuesday there.
