KATHMANDU: Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives today confirmed bird flu in crows of Kathmandu valley during a meeting with Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Means. Earlier the Department of Livestock Services that falls under the ministry had denied that crows at Rastriya Shava Grihya had died due to bird flu.
The bird flu cases were jointly verified by Minister of State for Agriculture Om Prakash Yadav, Agriculture Secretary Nathu Prasad Chaudhary and Department of Livestock Services Director General Dr Nar Bahadur Rajwar. The committee had held a meeting with the ministry after bird flu was confirmed in Panchthar, Ilam, Sunsari and Jhapa districts....

KATHMANDU: The Directorate of Animal Health under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives today said they have not recorded any bird flu case in ducks and chickens in the Kathmandu Valley.
Dr Ram Krishna Khatiwada, programme director at the directorate, said at a press conference that not a single case has been confirmed positive for bird flu in the samples collected from various parts of the Valley. ?It is safe to consume well-cooked meat of ducks and chickens,? said the programme director.
Although a crow found dead at the Rastriya Sabha Griha tested positive for avian influenza, we did not take more samples, he said.
Khatiwada said they are collecting and testing samples of dead sparrows, owls and crows nationwide, expressing concern about media reports that more than 20,000 chickens have died in Dhading. He said the result is yet to be confirmed, adding that they had recorded bird flu outbreak in six places of four districts, namely Ilam, Sunsari, Jhapa and Panchthar. ?We are conducting intensive surveillance at the outbreak zones,?
